Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2024-09-16

More than a touch of Autumn and very definitely the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.

Stock numbers still strong with 854 cattle and 1,565 sheep on offer consigned by 232 vendors.

Store and breeding cattle out in force again with a total of 524 on offer.

Trade undiminished with some superb prices achieved steers to £1,950 with heifers to £1,580 and feeding bulls to £1,460.  In the breeding section stock bulls sold to £2,850 for a pedigree Limousin with cows and calves to £1,600 and in calvers to £1,100.

The store cattle demand fuelled to a certain extent by the continuing trade for the finished cattle with 96 animals on offer this week with top figures 345p/kg and £2,462 per head.

The average for the 35 heifers was a respectable 288.9 pence making an average heifer gross £1,708.

Another substantial entry of 134 cull and OTM cattle with a great trade prevailing from start to finish.  Top figures 253 pence and £2,380 per head.  The average looked good this week at 182.1 pence.

Calves seem to be more numerous at Bakewell in recent months with 100 on offer again.  Good prices too with bulls to £485 and heifers to £440.

In the sheep section there were 1,273 lambs on offer.

Trade for the best fleshed sorts still very strong with top figures 327.0 pence and £165.36.

The SQQ average was 281.4 pence with the overall at 282.0 pence demonstrating that heavyweight lambs are clearly wanted.

In the cull sheep section 291 head sold to a maximum of £173 with the ewe average a solid £104.85.
