Bakewell Market Report 14-09-2020

Monday 14th September 2020

A surprisingly busy market with 926 Cattle and 1,962 Sheep on offer.

Trade good in all sections with prices remaining buoyant in uncertain times.

The Store & Breeding Cattle section was well supported with a total of 632 head forward.  Plenty of buying power present or represented to ensure a solid trade from start to finish.

Steers to £1,270, heifers £1,125 and feeding bulls £920.

There were various cow & calf outfits with the best on offer at £1,170.

In the finished cattle section, a total of 114 animals were sold with the top figures 259p/kg and £1,565 per head.

The heifer average very similar to last week at 198.1p and steers not far behind at 192.8p.

OTM and feeding cows out in force at 117 head with top figures 179p/kg and £1,720 per head.

The average looking particularly healthy at 126.8p.

Calf numbers the same as last week at 63 with bulls to £325 and heifers £300.

In the sheep department the 1,345 lambs maintained at recent levels with the best to 241p and 119.37 per head.

The SQQ average looked good at 217.8p.

There was a decent show of 608 Cull Sheep with ewes reaching £149 to average £65.90 for a rather mixed entry.

117 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows Overall Average 126.8p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)  

58 vendors to 18 buyers

Same numbers as last week and an improved average (up 5p on the week) with some very well presented cows today.  Best meated, dry bagged and Farm Assured were good to sell today with plenty of competition throughout the day.  Top price was 178p for a clean 31 mnth heifer (1st into the ring) from Clive South T/A Longacre, Derby.  Top Cow was a Blue at 173p with all the better Cows 150p plus.

 

51 Black & White and ex-dairy cows Ave 114.7p

Similar money to last week but less plainer cows about.  Meat easiest to sell with best cow at 151p for Peter Furness with a big B&W from Roger Ardern at 149p or £1239 who had another at 1306.  Better sorts 140p plus, big Holsteins 120-135p with smaller Holstein 105-115p and only a few plain under £1.

An unbelievable average but look at the top prices.  Jonathon Salisbury topped the day at 231p, 230p and 212p etc and Keith Harrop 227p x2, 218p, 212p etc 4 big bulls sold to average £1443 from R Prue & Son, Alfreton.  B&W to 186p for David Batterbee.

17 Natives and 28 Continentals today with some excellent well-fed heifers in the offering.  Butchers heifers peaked at an amazing 259p for a 500kg Limousin from Steven Jones (topping both steers and heifers today) and selling to RW Walmsley, Quality Butchers, Catterton, York.  Messrs Grindon had 242p and 229p for their 2 Limousins with Mark Hadfield up to 232p.  Best of the Natives in the 190’s

After last weeks large entry which followed the Bank Holiday week, we expected a smaller show, but that was not the case and 632 Cattle were forward.  Buyers had been notified of the quantity and were either present or represented to ensure a decent trade, which whilst not quite as dear as some recent weeks was not far behind.

Strong cattle in particular looked very well sold as the following figures will demonstrate.
