Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market
Bakewell Market Report 2024-10-21
Decent entries despite Blue Tongue boundaries which have kept a few vendors away with a total of 651 cattle and 1,632 sheep on offer.
No change in the restricted area last week or so, but please keep checking the interactive Blue Tongue map.
Fewer store & breeding cattle on offer following the recent sales which have no doubt tied up some potential vendors under the 6-day rule.
Of the 326 store cattle trade was distinctly sharper and there were some excellent cattle on offer.
Steers sold to £1,780 to average a remarkable £1,196, heifers to £1,680 to average £1,070 and feeding bulls to £1,120 average £950.
The above figures show a tremendous trade, but also the quality of the entry.
Finished cattle out in force with 156 on offer. Top figures 380p/kg and £2,492 per head.
The 80 heifers averaged a tremendous 287.9 pence with the 45 steers at 280.0 pence. Bulls sold to 328p/kg to top at £2,492 per head.
52 calves forward this week with bulls to £470 and heifers £315.

The average was back a bit this week at 170.9 pence.

148 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS overall ave 170.9p/kg or £1159
(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)
A very large entry of cows this week from 62 vendors and including a good number of B/W cows today. Trade on the whole would be less money, not much but the average is 8 pence less on the week, but a lot of lean weathered cows in the entry today. 4 overage clean at the top of the list with Jonathon Hall at the top at 259p and Roger Ardern with 3 at 245,243 and 241p. Best cows rose to 233p for a pedigree Limmy from Ashford Hall. Plenty of feeding buyers still operating at ringside for the lean cows with potential to grow. Bakewell is certainly the place to market the cows and if you have any to sell, give me a call and I will be more than happy to give any advice.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneers Alastair Sneddon & Meg Elliott)
A smaller entry of only 295 head this week possibly due to a number of factors. Blue Tongue, 6-day rule shut downs and perhaps because we have had so many in recent weeks that vendors have sold earlier this season.
Whatever the reason there was plenty of demand, new buyers operating and a tremendous trade distinctly up on recent weeks.
Feeding Bulls
Only a handful, prices as follows:
£1120 | Hfd x | 13 mnths | TJ Jackson, Ashbourne |
£720 | Sim | 8 mnths | JW & JR Davies, Hope |
£1060 | Char x | 13 mnths | G Goodwin, Wetley Rocks |
164 Steers ave £1196
Bigger cattle, bigger prices. More stronger cattle this week hence the higher average.
Some superb runs attracting very brisk bidding as the results will demonstrate. Angus and Hereford as popular as usual. Some good bunches of B/W’s selling on a great trade.

342 Cull Sheep
(Auctioneers M Elliott & H Swift)
Yet again a very varied entry and in fairness they looked harder to sell, but the average for the whole shed was actually up nearly £3/head on last week.
Less grazing customers about and the middle Mules harder to sell but the best end Mules still well past £102.
Top call £163 for Texels from John Gould at Chelmorten with Toby Hall and the Drabble family both at £153.
Better crossbred framed Texels over £130, but some neat Beltex ewes looked harder to sell.
Generally, the slaughter tups good to sell to a top of £186 and £165 for Texels.
