Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2024-11-04

Numbers back somewhat with some Bakewell customers trapped behind Blue Tongue lines and unable to sell in the free world as it were.

Shorter supply resulted in improved prices with all sections reporting a very strong trade.

There were 354 store & breeding cattle on offer with bidders working very hard to secure a load.

Steers sold to £1,810 (ave £1,076), heifers £1,760 (ave £969) and feeding bulls to £1,560 ave (£1,024)

Remarkable figures bearing in mind that the biggest and best cattle have generally been sold by this time of year and are definitely in short supply.  With the future looking ever more uncertain now might be the time to sell.

If you want a chat about it speak to Alastair Sneddon on 07973 982441.

Plenty of fireworks in the finished cattle cattle section with 121 head on offer and top prices of 360p and £2,513 per head.

The average for the 53 heifers was an outstanding 301.8 pence and the per head figure also looked good at £1,744.

Plenty of steam in the OTM department with 126 head selling on a sparkling trade reaching 248p and £2,067 per head.

The average almost 10p better than last week at 181.0 pence.

Only 38 calves this week, but plenty of demand with bulls to £475 and heifers £450.

Over in the sheep shed there were 999 lambs forward with trade substantially better and new buyers operating.  Top figures 360p/kg and £179.31 per head with the SQQ average at a remarkable 302.8 pence and the overall figure 303.2p indicating a strong demand for heavyweight lambs.

403 cull sheep on offer with trade distinctly better.  Ewes sold to £230 to average a healthy £108.92.

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

Cows have gone dearer again with a sparkling trade to light up the moods of any farmers who showed cows today.  It’s not often that cows lift this early but a lack of supply has boosted the appetite of all buyers at ringside.  Best today sold to 248p for a Limmy from Philip Coope, Taddington with better sorts easily over 220p.  If you have got cows to sell, the best way to achieve the maximum return is in the Livestock market and at Bakewell we have a big ring of buyers looking to purchase genuine farmers cows.  For any information on how we market cows in Bakewell give me a call on 07801 530899.
