Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2024-11-18

A snowy early morning at Bakewell with farmers boarding the buses and heading to London for the protest

The market was full of stock with 887 cattle and 1,672 sheep on offer, with wintry conditions forecast and concerns about global warming put aside for the time being, by close of play it was snowing.

Numbers of both cattle and people were swelled by the special entries of breeding cattle with new faces around the ring from as far as North Wales.  With 93 breeding stock on offer there was an abundance of interest and a superb trade as a result.

There were a total of 526 store & breeding cattle on offer.

In calf Lim heifers peaked at £2,400 with 10 making over £2,000.  In the regular stores steers sold to £1,920, heifers £1,800 and feeding bulls £1,600.

Demand for the finished cattle had brought us a few more with 151 in total.  Trade was outstanding although perhaps not quite as frantic as last week.

Top figures 374p/kg for both steers and heifers and a top gross price of £2,630.

The 86 heifers averaged 306.0p/kg.

There was a good turnout of 143 OTM and feeding cows with top figures 280p/kg and £2,390 per head.

The averaged was a shade less than last week at 178.9 pence.

67 calves forward this week with bulls to £480 and heifers to £360.

In the sheep section there were 1,304 lambs on offer with top figures 325p/kg and £171 per head.

The SQQ average and overall average were identical at 291.6 pence, a shade less than last week.

Trade also a little easier for the 365 cull sheep with ewes to £192 to average £97.25

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

A big day in the cow ring and they just kept coming long after we started the sale at 9.45am.  Not just as many well bred suckler cows on offer and a high proportion of B&W’s on offer.  A best AA OTM heifer at 33mnths sold at 280p (£2066) for Messrs White, Castern with best cows at 260p for John Grummett.  Trade remains good for the cows, about 25 pence more than this week last year and there is strong demand for cow meat from the abattoirs.  At Bakewell we are well placed to make the most of your cows with buyers for the heavy meated suckler cows, dairy cows as well as the leaner cows suitable for feeding with an army of buyers looking for these.  If you have any to sell, give me a call on 07801 530899.
