Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2024-11-25

After snow, ice, gales and floods all since last Monday it is remarkable that stock numbers were as good as they were with 710 cattle and 958 sheep on offer.

Conditions were not conducive to sheep sorting, so it is hardly surprising that there were only 647 lambs on sale, but those that were able to come sold very well indeed.

Store & breeding cattle numbers were back a bit after last week’s bonanza, but there were still 364 on offer and a decent trade prevailed for a very mixed lot.

Steers reached £1,840 for an animal from the family of the late Robert Wood of Gratton Moor and the average for steers was a remarkable £1,143 demonstrating the strength of demand.  Heifers topped at £1,690 also a Robert Wood animal with the average £918.  Feeding bulls sold to £1,340 also from the same vendor.  The breeding cattle section highlights included Limousin cows and calves to £2,700 and £2,460.

Finished cattle prices continue to raise eyebrows with top figures 375p/kg and £2,684 per head.

The average for the 51 heifers was 318.5 p/kg and an astonishing £2,684 per head.

Please remember that this is a regular week with 146 commercial cattle.  We will have to wait until next week to see what results the Christmas Primestock Show produces.

Good news also from the OTM department with 145 forward.

Top figures 272p/kg and £1,943 per head.

The average looked good at 176.6 pence bearing in mind the varied assortments.

55 calves this week with bulls to £470 and heifers £260.

Sheep numbers were down partly due to the weather, but also because a number of regular vendors have sold their last lambs of the season.

The resulting shortage boosted prices with the best at 319.8 pence making a typical lamb in the 39.1 – 45.5kg weight range worth £137.27.

Cull sheep numbers also less with ewes to £215 to average £121.81 per head.
