Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2024-12-30

One of those in between markets with many vendors content to wait for ‘business as usual’ on the 6th January.

There were, however, 151 cattle and 1,542 on offer and those vendors who did consign stock were well pleased with the outcome.

Only a handful of store cattle which included cows and calves to £2,400, steers £1,600 and heifers £1,490.

A good turnout of 59 finished cattle with trade dearer than ever.  Top figures 370p/kg and £2,477.  The 31 heifers averaged 333p/kg and £2,063 per head.  The 25 steers averaged 314.3p/kg and £2,189 per head.

Just 36 OTM cattle on offer with top figures 250p/kg and £1,852 per head.

The averaged was a cracking 187.6p and £1,260 per head.

45 calves this week with bulls to £390 and heifers £275.

In the sheep section there was plenty of demand for the 1,250 lambs on offer.  Top figures 374p/kg and £205.63.  The SQQ average looked good at 336.1 pence, making a lamb in the 39.1-45.5kg weight range average £144.52.

A useful turnout of 292 cull sheep with ewes to £229 to average £129.44.

Happy New Year to everyone and back to business as usual on Monday 6th January 2025.

36 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS overall ave 187.6p/kg

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

Only a few on offer for the inbetweeners day and trade certainly dearer, even with a couple of wholesalers missing.  The cows will go dearer as we progress in to the New Year and onwards to Spring.  At Bakewell we have a large ring of wholesale buyers looking for heavy fleshed cows as well as worked dairy cows.  There is also an army of buyers looking for cows to improve for further feeding.  Cows will be wanted in numbers for the 6th January.

Thankyou for all your custom in making Bakewell one of the leading centres for selling barren cows in 2024.  Cows today peaked at 250p for a young 35 month old Simmy for Steve Thompson with the better end nicely over 200p plus.
