Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2025-01-06

Things looked very grim at 5.30am Monday morning with snow on the hills and flooding in the valleys, but Bakewell customers are a hardy lot and by selling time there were 453 cattle and 961 sheep in the market.

Needless to say, sufficient buyers had arrived to ensure a storming trade in all departments.

There were a number of vendors who were unable to make the journey and the missing lots of store cattle have been rebooked for next week.

On a sad note, it was announced in the sale ring that Roger Ardern of Topley Pike had passed away last week and minutes silence was held.  Funeral details will be circulated when known.

215 store cattle braved the elements to be sold on another tremendous trade.  Steers sold to £1,980 to average a record breaking £1,406 with heifers to £1,680 average £1,097 and feeding bulls sold to £1,480 to average £1,286.

The finished cattle section was very well supported with 137 head on offer.  Top figures 400p/kg and £2,653 per head.

Our barometer of trade the average for the 78 heifers was 319.9 pence and £2,052 per head.

Thinking about trying some finished cattle at Bakewell?  Have a word with Oliver Hiles on 07801 530899.

Only 65 OTM and cull cows with top figures 270p and £2,188.  The average was an astonishing 199.3 pence and £1,365 per head for the cows.

Not really the weather for calf selling but there were 36 on offer with bulls to £402 and heifers £280.

Turning to the sheep there were 848 hoggs forward with prices looking good.

Top figures 357p/kg and £192.56 per head.  The SQQ average was 328.4p/kg which makes an average lamb in the 39.1 – 45kg weight range come to £140.65.

Only 113 cull sheep forward with demand outstripping supply.

Ewes sold to £205 to average £136.64.
