Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market
Bakewell Market Report 2025-01-13
Slightly better travelling conditions this week enabling 620 cattle and 1,102 sheep to be assembled for sale.
Prices seem to have taken another hike as today’s results will reveal.
There were 262 store & breeding cattle on offer and a packed ring of buyers competing hard to secure stock.
Steers sold to £2,100 to average £1,428, £22 more than last week’s record. Heifers sold to £2,220 to average £1,290, almost £200 more than last week.
There were only a few bulls, but they reached £1,680 to average £1,243. In the breeding section cows and calves made up to £1940 and in calvers £2,200.
The confidence shown in the store ring surely a result of the finished cattle returns.
This week there were a total of 168 finished cattle with top figures 400p/kg and £2,742.
We had to tap our usual barometer of trade twice to check the average for the 79 heifers which was an astonishing 344.5 pence and £2,094 per head.
A decent turnout of 109 OTM & Cull cows. Top figures 288p and £2,378 per head.
The average jumped 10 pence on the week to settle at 210.1 pence.
81 calves on offer with the lift in prices also evident, Bulls sold to £540 and heifers £440.
In the sheep department 859 hoggs sold on a cracking trade with top figures 364p/kg and £198.75.
The SQQ average looked good at 341.3 pence making an average lamb in the 39.1 – 45.5kg bracket £145.21.
In the cull sheep section there were 243 on offer with ewes to £228 to average £141.57.

109 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS overall ave 210.1p/kg or £1388
(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)
Bigger numbers after last week’s snowy market and cows considerably dearer on the week, up about 11 pence on the week and they certainly felt it. 2 returning buyers at ringside today and they found it hard work to put any numbers together with the price out of control. A hot one from Nigel & Julie Birch achieved the top price of 288p for a 1 calf 34 mnth old Simmental with Mark Froggatt close behind at 270p (£2262). Cows are getting dearer. The only way to achieve the best price is to sell them on their feet in Bakewell Market where there is a full line up of end users who want you cattle.
