Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2025-01-20

Rather busier than anyone expected with 757 cattle and 1,775 sheep.  Trade for cattle unbelievably even stronger than last week and sheep prices very respectable.

There were 403 store & breeding cattle – an excellent show with some fantastic cattle on offer and remarkable prices achieved.  Steers sold to £2,500 with the average, yet another new record at £1,494.  Heifers topped at £2,700 with another record average at £1,390.  Feeding bulls sold to £1,800 and cows and calves £2,420.

Make no mistake, these are remarkable figures but the quality of the cattle on offer is a tribute to Bakewell’s vendors.  They should be very proud of what they have produced.

The price of store cattle is driven by the unprecedented demand for finished cattle and that demand is being maintained.  There were 136 being sold today with top figures 410p/kg and £2,932 per head.

The average for the 76 heifers was a mind boggling 337.1p equating to £1,994 per head for a mixed sample.

OTM cattle were also out in force with 151 forward.  Prices have lifted yet again with top figures 315p/kg and £2,721 per head.  The average has taken a jump to 209.4p/kg.

Just 35 calves on offer this week with bulls to £370 and heifers £360.

Decent numbers in the sheep shed with a total of 1,775 on offer

The 1,272 hoggs were a shade easier that last week’s exceptional trade.

Top figures 360p/kg and £197.99 per head.

The SQQ average emerged at 323.8 pence.

Rather more cull sheep on offer with the entry at 482.  Ewes sold to £250 with the average a substantial £125.20

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneers Alastair Sneddon & Meg Elliott)

A very decent entry of 403 head bearing in mind we had 520 last Friday for the HPLS sale.

Some superb cattle on offer and a tremendous demand all conspired to produce record prices with many vendors stating that they would be bringing more cattle next Monday.

There were some good sized consignments enabling cattle to be batched in to level bunches which kept up the pace of the sale and attracted a distinct premium.

There was only 1 cow and calf outfit which was a 60 month Shorthorn Cow with a 1 month old bull calf, it was sold by Mr J Lyon of Flagg for £2,420.

481 Cull Sheep

(Auctioneer Mark Elliott & Holly Swift)

An excellent number forward and something for all purchasers whether it be breed, size, style or finish.

Generally, trade held well with the top end and middle best fleshed types just as dear.

Top call £250 for a smart long pure Texel from Boden & Davies.

Better end Mules over £110 but they needed power.

A fair proportion of plainer ewes from most breeds and the flesh definitely commanded a premium.

The top 7 pens were all Texels and averaged £206.71.  Some meated Gritstones over £115 and horned ewes topping £100.

In the tups a run of Suffolks to £183 for Philip Hill and Texels to £190 for Stuart Hudson of Ilam.

Ewes to £250                Ave £125.43

Rams to £190                Ave £151.67
