Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2025-02-03

Decent stock numbers at Bakewell with 687 cattle and 1,486 sheep on offer.

The cattle trade maintaining recent record levels and the sheep noticeably dearer than last week.

We are just starting to see a few stock from the Bluetongue Restriction Zone which are permitted to be sold at Bakewell under strict new rules.

Rather than setting out this information it will be much easier if you speak to one of the auctioneers.

For sheep, speak to Peter Oven, for finished cattle – Oliver Hiles and for store & breeding cattle – Alastair Sneddon.

It is vital that these rules are fully understood and obeyed to the letter.

The store & breeding cattle section assembled 363 head with trade just as strong as we have seen in recent weeks.  Although there were fewer strong cattle in the entry, those that were in the market were very dear indeed with steers to £2,500 (ave £1,404) and heifers £2,640 (ave £1,263) & feeding bulls sold to £1,250 (ave £950).

In the breeding section in calf Charolais cows made £2,000 and Ped Angus Heifers in calf to Angus up to £1,860.

Underpinning the store trade are the finished cattle prices, which were just as impressive as last week despite fewer top notch cattle in the sample.

Top figures 410p/kg and £2,969.  The average for the 78 heifers was 351.7 pence and £2,165 per head.

The OTM section was well supported with 140 on offer, top figures 319p/kg and £2,750 per head.

The average was a record breaking 227.7 pence with the average per head at an astonishing £1,526.

33 calves on offer with bulls to £482 and heifers £420.

In the sheep section there was a much increased entry of 1,106 hoggs and a better trade too.

Top figures 390p/kg and £250.29 per head.

The SQQ was a solid 332.4p making an average lamb in the 39-45 kg range worth £141.44.

A good show of 377 cull sheep sold on an outstanding trade with ewes to £246 to average £150.58.

Trade marches on in the upwards direction with the cows 16 pence dearer on the week with more cows on offer.  The average is also 50 pence more on the year or nearly £400/cow more money than last year.  Whilst the price is changing so fast the only way to make the maximum price of your cows is to market them on their legs at Bakewell.  Best price today was 319p for a smart Black Limousin, 1 calf cow from Caz Sharpley, Wildboarclough.  Better continental sorts generally 260p+ and the biggest sorts over £2000.

Equally as good as last week’s record prices and possibly even dearer in places.  I fully accept that cattle are in demand everywhere but at Bakewell we can make as much of them as anywhere with prices sky high.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneers Alastair Sneddon & Meg Elliott)

Another good turnout of 363 head bearing in mind that cattle are scarce and that is one of the factors driving the price.

More younger and smaller cattle in the entry and fewer of the short finish variety.
