Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 10th February

Plenty of demand and a bit less supply with 626 cattle and 1,642 sheep on offer.

Cattle prices up yet another notch.

In the sheep section hoggs a shade easier, but cull ewes selling at extraordinary levels.

Another useful selection of 351 store & breeding cattle saw prices even higher than last week.

Steers hit £2,420 to average £1,408 with heifers to £2,360 and £1,373 and feeding bulls to £1,600.

Remarkable though those figures might appear more this week’s entry included more small and young cattle making the figures more significant.

If you have store cattle to sell and need advice, give Alastair Sneddon a call on 07973 982441.  We are happy to view stock on farm and arrange publicity for special entries.  Bakewell buyers would love the opportunity to bid at your stock.

About the same number of finished cattle forward with 153 in total, but whilst numbers were level, prices have gone higher still.

Top figures 435p/kg and £3,065 per head with the average for the 90 heifers an amazing 372.3 pence.  The per head average was just as impressive at £2,221.

Fewer OTM’s with only 100 on offer suggesting a shortage.  Bearing in mind current price levels, if there are any out there, they should be heading for Bakewell.

Top figures 348p/kg and £3,270 with the average at 234p and £1,547 per head for cows.

Only 22 calves this week with bulls to £480 and heifers £350.

In the sheep department there were a few more hoggs forward with 1,170 on offer.

Top figures 374p/kg and £192.64 per head.

The SQQ average was 326.8 pence, a shade less than last week.

There was an excellent turnout of 472 cull sheep with ewes selling to an incredible £278 to average £144.06.
