Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2021-03-29

A big day with substantial entries in all departments and some 742 Cattle and 1,814 Sheep on offer.

Demand was outstanding for all classes of stock and a wealth of highlights in both sheep and cattle sections.

In normal times we would have had the Easter Lamb Show and there were 64 Spring Lambs forward with an astonishing trade and prices that could not have been contemplated.

Top figures 725p/kg and £300.88 per head.

The SQQ average for spring lambs was 635.8p/kg.

Hoggs (Old Season Lambs) were also in great demand, with the best of the 1,405 to 386p/kg and £172.80 per head.  The SQQ levelled at 309.5 pence.

Dealing with the 342 Cull sheep, again plenty of trade with ewes to £155 to average £93.95.

Turning to the cattle department there was a bumper crop of 571 Store & Breeding cattle with prices if anything even dearer than last week.

Steers sold to £1,410, Heifers £1,320 and Feeding Bulls £1,100 and In calf cows reached £1,330.

Suffice it to say that anyone with Store Cattle to sell would be well advised to let the buyers at Bakewell bid for them.

A useful entry of 98 Finished Cattle sold exceptionally well with top figures 270p/kg and £,681 per head.  The average for the 40 heifers at 221.4p/kg gives an indication on the strength of demand.

Rather more OTM Cattle on offer with 105 meeting a solid trade, top figures 187p and £1,664 with the average 142.6p.

Calves still thin on the ground, bulls sold to £385 and heifers £398.
