Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 3rd March

Good numbers forward at Bakewell with 754 cattle and 1,849 sheep with a total clearance effected.

Trade very similar to last week in most sections with very satisfactory results throughout the market.  The fact that 243 vendors chose to sell at Bakewell today tells its own story.

There were 485 head in the store cattle section and no breeding cattle at all an indication that they are thin on the ground.

The store cattle were as dear if not dearer than we have seen them in recent weeks with steers to £2,700 ave £1,443, heifers to £2,720 ave £1,222 and bulls to £2,520 ave £1,264.

The averages quoted include all comers and we had plenty of small cattle little more than weaned calves in the entry which makes the averages all the more remarkable.

There were 143 finished cattle on offer with trade much as last week.  Some of the averages were lower, but this was a function of quality rather than trade.

Top figures 423p/kg and £3,308 per head.

The heifer average for the entry of 67 was 367.2p and the per head average £2,297 exactly the same figure as last week.

Steers average 360.8 pence and £2,416 per head.

Fewer OTM cattle about with the entry at 91 head.  Top figures 340p/kg and £2,980 per head.

The average a remarkable 241.3 pence with the cows averaging £1,593 per head.

33 calves and trade as strong as ever, bulls to £560 and heifers £460.

Over in the sheep department there was a decent entry of 1,352 hoggs.

Top figures 398p/kg and £189.53 per head.

The SQQ came in at 336.5p for a mixed end of season sample.

This made an average hogg in the 39-45kg bracket worth £143.62.

Another large entry of cull sheep sold on another strong trade with ewes to £281 to average £144.39.
