Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market
Bakewell Market Report Monday 17th March
A quieter day with only 544 cattle and 1433 sheep on offer.
The reason, several regular vendors were unable to consign stock having purchased cattle at last Friday’s HPLS sale and thus were trapped by the 6 day rule and lambing is underway on many farms.
There might have been a reduced supply, but there was no sign of reduced demand.
All cattle sections reported outstanding prices and in the sheep section there were good results too.
Store cattle numbers were down on the year with only 303 forward. The lack of supply clearly driving prices bidders fought harder than ever to secure stock.
Steers sold to £2,680 to average £1,529
Heifers to £2,520 to average £1,339
With the fewer finished cattle on offer trade was very strong.
Top figures 443p/kg and £3,406 per head.
The 49 heifers averaged a remarkable 393.9 pence and £2,443 per head.
OTM numbers at 93 with record averages at 273.1 pence and £1,765 per head.
The top figures were an astonishing 415p/kg and £3,095 per head.
Calf numbers only 41, but the buyers certainly wanted then with bulls to £645 and heifers £550.
In the sheep section trade was up on the week.
The first Spring lambs put in an appearance selling to 410p/kg and £176.30 per head to average 373.5 pence.
There was a solid demand for the 1,070 finished hoggs with top figures 379p/kg and £187.98 per head.
The SQQ was 331.5 pence making an average lamb in the 39-45 kg range worth £141.52.
344 cull sheep on offer with ewes to £290 to average a remarkable £161.85

Up 7 pence on last week’s record!
The cows keep moooving in an upward trajectory with prices at record levels and unbelievably 90 pence dearer than this time last year. How long can it last?
Well, whilst the numbers are low and the demand is good then they will remain strong, but one thing that is for sure is that the best place to market them is in the livestock market where a full ring of buyers bid freely for your cows. Best price today was a record 415p or £3095 for a Blue heifer (43 mnths) from Mark Sweetmore, Hollinsclough who had another Blond cow (5 ½ yrs) at 330p. 22 cows today topped £3/kilo,

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneers Alastair Sneddon & Meg Elliott)
Numbers back at 303 head with buyers desperate to purchase cattle and prices up another notch.
If you have store cattle in test and have half a mind to sell them, give us a call. No one can predict how long the current prices will hold.
We had no breeding cattle this week an indication of the current shortage, but if we had some, they would have been very dear.
There were 14 Feeding Bulls a very mixed selection, which sold well for what they were.
167 Steers ave £1529
Some superb cattle in the entry with prices to match.
There were a number of significant bunches which definitely commanded a premium.
The cattle featured on the front of the catalogue fulfilled their promise with the first pen at £2,000 per head for 10-13 month old Lim x.
