Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 31st March

Numbers down in some departments with lambing in full swing and field work calling in arable areas but we still ended up with 620 Cattle and 1061 Sheep.

One item of news is a slight change in the Blue Tongue Rules.  This is not as straight forward as it first appears and our advice to vendors wishing to sell store stock out of the restricted zone is to contact APHA for advice and guidance.

Store and Breeding cattle numbers were 341 this week with trade still on the rise.

Steers reached an astonishing £2780 to average £1659 despite a good many weanlings in the entry.

Heifers produced an even more extraordinary result with the best to £3000 and the average £1246 for a very mixed sample including many small and young cattle.

Cows with calves are very scarce and very dear with the on offer at £2840.

Whilst store numbers were down the finished cattle entry was up with a total of 171 on offer, Top figures 471p/kg and £3548 with the 86 heifers averaging 388.2 pence, Steers reached 437p/kg to average 391.1p/kg.

A much smaller sample of 72 OTM Cows sold on a lightly easier trade with top figures 360p/kg and £2685, the averages were 268.9p/kg and a hefty £1807 per head.

Calf numbers about the same at 36 with bulls to £550 and heifers £525.

Many fewer sheep than last weeks massive entry with only 1061 in total.

Only 6 New Season lambs on offer selling to 450p/kg to average 448.9p and realising £191.16 per head, fewer hoggs with 914 forward, Top figures 390p/kg and £197.78 per head. The sqq settling at 323.9 and the overall 325.0p. A small turnout of 116 cull sheep saw ewes to £234 to average £149.09.
