Bakewell Market Report Monday 7th April

A really busy day with no fewer than 910 cattle and 1,413 sheep consigned by a total of 249 individual vendors.

Trade good in all sections, but in the store & breeding cattle ring prices were higher than ever.

 

There were 542 head of store & breeding cattle with a special entry of pedigree Limousins from Clark Farms of Ringinglow taking top honours with the best 17 mnths heifers to £3,300 with 4 more hitting the £3,000 mark.

Store steers not far behind with a top of £2980 to average £1,617.  The heifers averaged £1,554 and feeding bulls sold to £1,920.

Cows with calves sold to £2,840 with stock bulls to £3,450.

 

There was a massive entry of finished cattle with 197 on parade.

Trade still excellent with top figures 438p/kg and £4,344 per head.

The average for the 95 heifers was a solid 379.8p/kg with the per head figure £2,314.

 

A good show of 125 OTM and cull sows with the top figures 390p/kg and £3,360 per head.

The average looking healthy at 277.4 pence and the cows averaging a remarkable £1,835 per head.

 

46 calves this week selling on a tremendous trade with bulls to £690 and heifers £545.

 

In the sheep department there were 23 Spring lambs selling to 480p/kg and £204.70 per head.

The SQQ average emerged at 330p/kg.

Only 180 cull sheep on offer but looking very well sold, ewes reached £268 to average £174.97.

The biggest entry for as long as I have known for the start of the new Tax year.  72 vendors today showed cattle and bulls with the £4000 mark surpassed today by a Limmy bull.

A tremendous trade as we have come to expect and some remarkable top prices.  John Ottewell had 2 heavyweights at 434p each (£3654 & £3255) with a big pure Limmy at £4344 (400p) from Joe Nicholls, Draycott in the Clay.  B/W’s to 364p with a big strong B/W at £2992 for David Gyte.
