Bakewell Market Report Tuesday 22nd April
Small entries for the Easter Tuesday market with 123 cattle and 699 sheep on offer.
As usual those who had chosen to bring stock were rewarded with an excellent trade in all departments.
There were only 55 store & breeding cattle forward, but there were buyers sufficient for a great many more and prices were well up to last week’s level. Even with the limited selection steers reached £2,400 and heifers £2,100.
Entries are already in hand for next Monday.
There were 29 finished cattle on offer with top figures 450p and £2,893 per head.
The heifer statistics tell the story with the 16 animals forward selling to 450p averaging 416.9p and a hefty £2,650 per head.
Only 22 OTM cattle this week with top figures 329p and £2,296 per head.
The average for a mixed sample 267.2 pence.
Calves – very thin on the ground with 17 on offer, bulls to £470 and heifers to £360.
In the sheep department there was a decent turnout of Spring lambs with 89 on offer. Top figures 520p/kg and £203.98 per head.
The SQQ average was a solid 321.2 pence.
Just 137 cull ewes forward with the best on offer to £245 and a useful average at £147.26.

Just a small entry of 10 Beef and 12 Dairy cows sold on a very similar trade to last week with a full complement of buyers.
4 cows topped 300p with a high of 329p for a black Limmy from Nigel Mosley, Stannington. The 12 ex dairy cows sold up to 324p for an OTM heifers (32 mnths) and 293p for a cow from J & L MacPherson, Newchurch.
