Bakewell Market Report Monday 5th May

Decent entries in all departments despite it being a Bank Holiday Monday with 560 cattle and 1,002 sheep on offer consigned by 177 vendors.

The market generally busy with additional buyers present who would normally be unable to come on a Monday due to work commitments.

Trade satisfactory in all sections with sheep prices up on the week and cattle returns looking very healthy.

Trade for the breeding and store cattle reached new heights with fantastic prices for young and small cattle whilst the stronger ones continue to sell at record levels.  Steers reached £2,620 to average £1,605 with heifers to £2,180 ave £1,384 and feeding bulls sold to £2,000.

In the breeding section there was a real selection to pick from with cows and calves to £4,050 and stock bulls to £3,900.

104 finished cattle on offer with the figures looking good.  Top prices 450p/kg and £3,628 per head.

The 62 heifers averaged 388.5 pence and £2,377 per head with the steers averaging 377p/kg and a massive £2,685 per head.

OTM numbers steady at 61 with top figures 369p and £3,708 per head. The overall average was 287.9p/kg and £1,899 per head.

Only 26 calves this week with bulls to £870 and heifers £475.

In the sheep section trade was up on the week.

The 121 Spring lambs peaked at 424p/kg and £173.18 per head.  The SQQ average emerged at 384.3 pence and making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg weight range £157.98 per head.

The 608 hoggs tend to be a mixed lot at this time of year.  The best reached 368p and £174.73 per head with the SQQ at 317.2 pence.  That made a typical lamb in the 39-45kg range worth £136.85.

There was a good trade for the 269 cull sheep with ewes to £259 and the average £154.05.

About half the regular entry and trade on fire with the average rising by 5 pence on the week to a record level of 287.9 pence.  The cow meat is very much in vogue at present with all the major wholesalers present at Bakewell and battling for the cows.  Top today was 369p (£2848) for an OTM 35 mnth old B Blue heifer from Jim & Angela Battye, a 1 calf young cow from Roger & Lee White at 366p (£2664) and a big blue cow from David Clowes at 364p (£2802).  If you would like to experience these types of returns, the best place to market your cows is on their legs in Bakewell Market.

Only a few, but trade strong throughout.  FK Baxter, Leicestershire won the day at 436p (£2781) with another trio over £4/kilo.  2 B/W today sold to 347p (£2477) for Neil Massey.

A lovely show and a lot of quality about.  A stunner of a Limmy from James Hodgkinson and Family rose to a marvellous 450p and sold to Joe Kemp, quality butchers at Hayfield.  Geoff Evans sold a weighted Blond x to 440p (£3088) with the best from Micheal Wynne at 439p  with others at 435 and 429p.

An absolutely flying trade on all types and many more could have been sold to vendors’ advantage.

Possibly a record top price for a smart Char bull from RS Torr, Tissington at £870 with Blue’s to £740 and Limousin to £560.

A similar story for the heifers all looking extremely well sold, whilst an entry of dairy bred calves way dearer than seen before with small Ayrshire bulls to a top of £145.

A very good entry for the Bank Holiday with buyers for everything and trade good.

Best Texels regularly £235 and over with the premium over £250 and a top of £259 for the Brough Family at Rake End.

Best Mules very good to sell but only a few were present with the secondary sorts up to £140.

The tups were a particular feature with big Texels to £268 and due to the fact that they were all Texels in the average this levelled at £221.

Horned meated ewes good to sell with the best above £102.

The ewe average close to last weeks figure at £154.04.
