Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market
Bakewell Market Report 05-04-2021
The decision to hold the Monday market on the Bank Holiday proved to be a great success aided by the arctic weather which deterred tourist traffic and avoided congestion in the Peak District.
There were 341 Cattle and 715 Sheep on offer with an outstanding trade in all sections and every animal changing hands.
The Store Cattle section was well supported with 335 head and there was plenty of buying power in operation to maintain recent levels of trade.
Steers sold to £1,250, Heifers £1,180 and Feeding Bulls £1,120.
It is clear that the finished beef trade is driving the demand for store cattle and this week’s finished cattle prices added fuel to the fire.
There were 54 cattle on offer with the best on offer to 286p and £1,867. The usual yardstick of trade the average for the 35 heifers confirmed price levels at no less than 236.8p.
OTM and feeding cattle were in short supply with only 43 forward, but anyone who showed cattle would have been delighted with the results. Top figures 194p and £1,525 with the overall average a record 154.0p.
Just a handful of calves, but all wanted, bulls to £375 and heifers £345.
In the sheep department the trade for spring lambs could not maintain last week’s amazing figures but still managed 465p and £177.72 per head.
Old season lambs and hoggs are drying up fast and there were only 488 on offer.
The shortage resulted in top figures of 414p/kg and £179.80 with the SQQ at 339.7p
The 215 Cull sheep looked well sold with ewes to £166 to average £110.69.
