Bakewell Market Report Monday 12th May

With temperatures the same as Mallorca (22 degrees) and no prospect of any significant rain, concerns are being voiced about the dry conditions, but trade remains firm in most sections.

In terms of numbers there were 847 cattle and 1,459 sheep on offer.

The store & breeding section had attracted a substantial 519 head.  Despite concerns about the potential drought prices were within a whisker of what we have come to expect in recent weeks.

Steers reached £2,820 to average £1,463 for an entry with a good many small cattle included.  Heifers topped at £2,200 to average £1,254 and feeding bulls £1,980.

In the breeding section cows and calves sold at up to £2,480 and strong feeding cows sold at £2,700.

There was a decent turnout of 144 finished cattle with trade easily maintaining recent levels.

Top figures 446p and £3070 per head.

The 66 heifers averaged 379p/kg and £2,248 per head.

The 45 steers averaged 376p/kg and a hefty £2,434 per head.

OTM cattle were out in force with 125 on offer.  Top figures 412p and £3,378 per head.  The average emerged at a solid 278.7p/kg and £1816 per head.

A decent show of 59 calves saw tremendous competition with bulls to £755 and heifers £585.

In the sheep section trade was solid with 253 Spring lambs selling to a maximum of 382p/kg and £171.39 per head.

The SQQ average 340.7p.

There were 797 finished hoggs, an end of season sample with quality very variable.  Top figures 350p/kg and £180.69 per head.

The SQQ average came out at 303.5 pence.

Finally, the cull sheep with a good turnout of 407 on offer.

Ewes sold to £262 to average an outstanding £163.69 per head.

A great entry and trade still strong for every breed.

 

407 cull ewes and rams to top at £266 for a texel tup from the Hadfield Family, with ewes following close behind at £262 for a pen of 7 texel ewes from the Broughs with his second pen selling at £256.

 

392 ewes averaged £164 up £10 on the week, with the top ten pens averaging £234. Heavy mules to £190 and plenty of half meated sheep well above the £150 mark.

 

15 tups averaged £199, with the top ten lots averaging £212.
