Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Tuesday 27th May

A small Tuesday market following the Bank Holiday with 174 cattle and 735 sheep consigned by 82 vendors.

Trade was well up to expectations with every animal changing hands.

A modest entry of 77 store & breeding cattle sold at recent levels of trade with plenty of bidders around the ring and some great prices achieved.

The much wished for rain was making its presence felt and allaying fears of a serious drought.

Highlight of the sale was a Ped Lim cow and calf from Mr Joe Nichols of Draycott which made £4,100.

In the steers and heifers section steers sold to £2,500, heifers £1,980 and feeding bulls £1,240.

It will be back to normal next Monday with a special entry of 14 cows and calves already booked in.

There were 47 finished cattle, a useful turnout for a Tuesday market.

Top figures 418p/kg and £2,938 per head.

The average for the 35 heifers was 382.3p/kg and £2,385 per head, proof that prices remain strong.

Only 24 OTM cattle on offer with the top figures 359p/kg and £3,618 for an outstanding Limousin cow.

The overall average was a healthy 260.2 pence.

Just 24 calves this week with bulls to £625 and heifers to £580.

In the sheep section there were 255 Spring lambs selling to 393p/kg and £173.24 per head.  The SQQ average was 314.8p.

The 248 hoggs were a mixed lot as might be expected at this time of year.

The best on offer sold to 314p and £154.65 per head with the SQQ average 276.4p.

The final section being 197 cull sheep with ewes to £220 to average £118.
