Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market
Bakewell Market Report Monday 2nd June
First week in June and still a full yard of stock with a total of 896 cattle and 1329 sheep on offer from a total of 276 vendors.
Store cattle numbers still exceptional for the time of year with 420 on offer and trade reported as still very strong for all.
Breeding outfits topped at £3350 for cows with heifer calves and £2850 for cows with bull calves, both from DF & A Wainwright, Cold Eaton.
Bulls peaked at £2720, steers to £2640 and heifers to £2640.
Oliver reported a possibly slightly easier finished cattle trade, but still looking very respectable for a very strong entry totalling 189 head which saw top price of 428p/kg and tops of £3510 for bulls, £3118 for steers and £2889 for heifers.
OTM numbers still respectable with trade just as dear as recent weeks to 344p/kg and £2972 per head.
Sheep numbers similar to recent weeks at 1329 with the Spring lambs up on week to average 360.6 pence and tops of 432p/kg and £201 per head whilst Hogg numbers continue to dry up for a very mixed sample. Cull ewes, however, a flying trade for an entry of 498 to average a very respectable £169 per head to a top of £272.
Calf numbers steady at 45 but trade again on fire with bulls to £760 and heifers to £630.

Cows remain good to sell and whilst they are a little less, the overage meat has seen the smallest drop. 21 best cattle still north of £3/kg and up to a high of 344p for an Angus heifer (31 mnths) from David Gregory, Glossop. Best cow today was a lovely 6 year old Limmy from Ben Langton that made 336p to gross £2667. Cows remain very much the flavour of the day and if you have any to sell give us a try at Bakewell.

Good numbers forward following the Bank Holiday including a larger than normal entry of 62 bulls and also a lovely special entry of cows and calves from the Wainwright Family at Cold Eaton.

The special entry of cows and calves from the Wainwright Family of Cold Eaton attracted much interest, no doubt attracted by the genuineness and style of the goods.
Trade was swift throughout topping at £3350 for a Blue cow and 2 month old heifer calf, with another to £3300. The whole entry averaged a superb £2615. Other outfits reached £1920 from PV Hawkins of Shirland.

An excellent pre festival entry with extra purchasers present and all categories very well bid for.
As a general comment the meated horned types were a very strong trade but the entry as a whole lacked a few top end long pure Texels.
Top call for John Spillane at £272 with Jackie Trueman close behind at £270 and £267.
The top 10 pens averaged £251.90.
Best Mules over £207 with plenty of pens over £185. The meated Swales topped just short of £120 with several lots over £95/head.
In the tups a fast trade to a top of £259 with other Texels at £252.
100% clearance and the average for the ewes levelled at £169.27.
30 slaughter rams averaged £145.30.
