Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 13th April

A catch up market following the Easter Bank Holiday with a capacity entry in the store cattle section and plenty happening in all the other departments.  Total entries 851 cattle and 1,542 sheep.

The international situation is very concerning with the price and availability of fuel becoming even more serious.

We include this photograph of Stuart Elliott’s cattle being driven in to Hope market in the 1990’s.

Let us hope that things do not deteriorate to such an extent that stock has to arrive on foot.

The store & breeding section was very well supported with 567 head on offer.

Highlight of the day was the consignment of Pedigree Limousin maiden heifers from Clark Farms of Ringinglow, aged from 16-19 mnths they sold exceptionally well with notable prices £3,750, £3750, £3,600 and a bunch of 3 Charolais x heifers, 17 mnths made £3,800.

3yo Ped Lim stock bulls sold at £3,200 and £4,100.

In the regular stores trade was strong right through the sale and whilst concerns about the deadweight prices of finished cattle were regularly voiced prices for stores still looked good particularly for the younger cattle.

Steers sold to £2,440 ave £1,694

Heifers sold to £2,330 ave £1,266

Feeding Bulls sold to £2,120 ave £1,266

There were 139 finished cattle on offer with trade solid, but heavier cattle harder to sell.  This was in contrast to smart young heifers which sold to 477p, top gross price £3,304.

To give an idea of trade, the average for the 68 heifers was 380.3 pence and £2,432 per head.

A good turnout of 112 OTM cattle sold well with top figures 325p and £3,226 per head.

The average looked very respectable at 260.5 pence and £1,801 per head.

Only 33 calves, which remain very dear indeed with bulls to £810 and heifers £735.

In the sheep shed we had 43 Spring lambs, these sold to 540p/kg and £222.60 per head.

The SQQ was 507.9 pence and a typical lamb in the 39-45kg weight range made £212.

Next came 1,062 hoggs with the best on offer to 485p and £225 per head.

The SQQ was 408.8 pence making a typical hogg in the 39-45 kg range worth £178.

A better show of 433 cull sheep included ewes to £280 ave £167.04
