Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

The rain has arrived not a moment too soon and coupled with some frost free nights has renewed confidence and maintained trade.

Stock was forward in good numbers with 837 cattle and 1,124 sheep on offer.

The were 548 Store & Breeding cattle, a near capacity entry, but demand was strong and the prices to which we have been become accustomed were maintained or exceeded.

Steers reached £1,390, heifers £1,280 and bulls £1,400.

In the Finished Cattle section there was a decent turnout of 127 and an outstanding trade.  Top figures 274p and £1,995 with the average for the 58 heifers at a healthy 221.9p.

There was also a good show of 124 OTM and Feeding Cows.  Top figures 198p and £1,719 with the average well up to par at 140.6p.

Calf numbers still very modest with 38 this week.  Trade strong with bulls to £460 and heifers £345.

In the Sheep department Spring Lamb numbers are on the rise with 299 on offer.

Plenty of interest with the best on offer to 430p and £176.30 per head.

The SQQ average looked good at 363.5p, just to put things in to context it was 265.8p 12 months ago.

We managed to scrape 455 Old Season Lambs together and they were well sold too with  top figures 348p and £180 per head.  The SQQ managing 299.6p.

In the Cull Sheep section things looked very dear with ewes to £170 to average £113.50.

124 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows Overall Average 140.6p or £931.67

A superb entry of 124 cows today from a wide area and selling to a good ring of buyers with a very fast trade experienced for every cow on offer and as usual a total clearance.  Cows are still very much in demand with the buyers looking to fill wagons with meat cows for further feeding.  Top today was 198p for a Limousin Cow (1 calf) form Mark Hambleton who had another Lim x Blue cow (4yrs) at 190p or £1482.  Peter Mosley had a superb big Limousin cow sell at 189p to gross a fantastic £1719.

A very similar trade to last week and some super prices.

Best Heifer sorts: 150p plus

Well-fed Friesian types: 145-155p

Big Holstein: 120-140p

127 FINISHED CATTLE – overall average 215.96p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

Bigger numbers after the Bank Holiday last week and with all buyers back at the ringside and needing cattle, the stage was set for some super bidding and outstanding prices.

25 Finished Bulls ave 204.8p/kg

Some excellent bulls today, but just look at the prices achieved.  Top price 252p and a record £1995.84 for Robert Hardy, Cauldon Low.  11 B/W saw best to 205p (another record) with another at 200p

 44 Steers – overall average 215.1.p/kg

Some super cattle on today and an excellent trade for the quality.  Nigel Birch sold a couple of super Lims to 250p (£1590) and 248p (£1547).  Paul Hazeldine had 245p for his best and Keith Harrop had 244p or £1844 for his Blonde.  5 B/W had Friesian to 203p with 11 Native today to 210p for Hereford, 240 for Angus and 229p for Shorthorn

58 Finished Heifers – overall average 221.9p/kg

Look at the prices achieved.  Top price 274p for a super shapey Blue x from Stuart Wainwright, Poynton and selling to “Show Boy” Wayne on behalf of H Meakin, Quality Butchers in Leek.  Bob Bacon had 269p or £1775 for his best of three.  Mark Hambleton had 264p or £1742 for his Limousin with the top gross at £1807 for a heavy Blonde Keith Harrop.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

The entry book was closed on Thursday afternoon with 550 cattle on the list and some 100 are already entered for next week, but despite the abundance of cattle demand remains extremely good as the following results will demonstrate.

A good selection with a broad approach and prices to match.

Any misgivings about the grass situation dispelled by recent rain and a hike in temperature.

Angus and Hereford clearly wanted and Black & White’s selling particularly well.

A decent selection with cattle to appeal to feeders, breeders and graziers. Some nice level bunches which sold well and helped to speed the progress of the sale

Trade again very strong for all types with numerous purchasers going home short of requirements.

Best bulls upwards of £400 and again heifers upwards of £300 to a top of £345.

Second quality equally as sought after and a similar story for the Black & Whites with these selling to £170.

1125 Sheep including 299 Spring Lambs, 455 Old Season Lambs, 369 Ewes & Rams & 2 Store Sheep

A total entry of 1125 sheep on offer included 299 New Season Lambs.  Demand very good for all types with a pen of Beltex x topping the day at 430p/kg with more from the same farm at 414p/kg.  Best end Texel saw a top of 398p/kg for 3 pens.  Best lambs grossed £176.30/head and an overall average 363.5p.

In the Old Season Lambs a total of 455 of mixed quality but demand still very brisk with best sorts to 348p/kg for butchers lambs with heavy butchers lambs to 333p/kg and overweight sorts to 322p/kg.  Best sorts peaking at £180/head.  The overall average 299.6p/kg.

Cull Sheep

In the Cull Sheep a total of 369 on offer saw trade still off the clock for all types.  Best Texel peaked at £170 with the top 14 pens over £150/head.  Meated Mules over £100/head.  Meated Hill ewes in the £65-£85 bracket and plain hill ewes in the £30-£45 bracket.
