Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 10-05-2021

The rain has arrived not a moment too soon and coupled with some frost free nights has renewed confidence and maintained trade.

Stock was forward in good numbers with 837 cattle and 1,124 sheep on offer.

The were 548 Store & Breeding cattle, a near capacity entry, but demand was strong and the prices to which we have been become accustomed were maintained or exceeded.

Steers reached £1,390, heifers £1,280 and bulls £1,400.

In the Finished Cattle section there was a decent turnout of 127 and an outstanding trade.  Top figures 274p and £1,995 with the average for the 58 heifers at a healthy 221.9p.

There was also a good show of 124 OTM and Feeding Cows.  Top figures 198p and £1,719 with the average well up to par at 140.6p.

Calf numbers still very modest with 38 this week.  Trade strong with bulls to £460 and heifers £345.

In the Sheep department Spring Lamb numbers are on the rise with 299 on offer.

Plenty of interest with the best on offer to 430p and £176.30 per head.

The SQQ average looked good at 363.5p, just to put things in to context it was 265.8p 12 months ago.

We managed to scrape 455 Old Season Lambs together and they were well sold too with  top figures 348p and £180 per head.  The SQQ managing 299.6p.

In the Cull Sheep section things looked very dear with ewes to £170 to average £113.50.

124 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows Overall Average 140.6p or £931.67

A superb entry of 124 cows today from a wide area and selling to a good ring of buyers with a very fast trade experienced for every cow on offer and as usual a total clearance.  Cows are still very much in demand with the buyers looking to fill wagons with meat cows for further feeding.  Top today was 198p for a Limousin Cow (1 calf) form Mark Hambleton who had another Lim x Blue cow (4yrs) at 190p or £1482.  Peter Mosley had a superb big Limousin cow sell at 189p to gross a fantastic £1719.

In the Cull Sheep a total of 369 on offer saw trade still off the clock for all types.  Best Texel peaked at £170 with the top 14 pens over £150/head.  Meated Mules over £100/head.  Meated Hill ewes in the £65-£85 bracket and plain hill ewes in the £30-£45 bracket.
