Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 27th April

Another respectable entry in all departments with cattle numbers totalling 798 head and sheep1227.

Store Cattle numbers again close to capacity totalling 533 with these including 15 breeding animals and the remainder being 518 stores which saw Steers to £2500 and averaging £1592, Heifers to £2480 and an average of £1405.  Plenty of optimism out there despite falling finished cattle trade and selling to the usual large gathering of potential purchasers.

Over in the finished cattle end Oliver reported another steadier trade in line with last week but fewer cattle forward totalling 98. Whilst they are undoubtedly less the top end still looks relatively respectable with tops of 432p/kg and £3190 per head.

OTM numbers still strong at 129 with those not seeing the same reductions as with the finished cattle and an average st 244p/kg and tops of 325p/kg which would look relatively comparable with recent weeks.

Calves as dear as they have ever been with Bulls to £845 and heifers to £685.

Sheep numbers totalled 1227 with Hoggs continuing to dry up but still a respectable average of 414p/kg to tops of 464p/kg and £223 Per head.

Spring lambs showing a pleasing increase in numbers at 164 but larger numbers nationally seeing trade drop back a little to average 459p/kg but still a pleasing top price of £254 per head.

Cull ewe numbers similar at 436 head and trade looking strong to a top of £299.

Market as normal next Monday despite it being a Bank Holiday.

129 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS overall ave 245.1p/kg or £1600

Good numbers and trade identical to last week but some way behind where we were 12 mths ago. Having said that the cows are wanted and needed in Bakewell with all classes good to sell.

Top call was a 325p/kg (£2795) for a 5yr old Lim from Ben & Katie Simpson, Bradwell with Lilian Hallam at 320p/kg and Mary Else at 318p/kg or the top gross £3033.

Feeding buyers still looking and bidding hard at any leaner, younger or shapier cows with potential to improve.
