Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 1st June

BAKEWELL MARKET REPORT

Monday 1ST June

A new month and a change in the weather brought 209 vendors to Bakewell with stock totalling 628 Cattle and 896 Sheep.

All sections reporting trade similar or better than we have seen in recent weeks.

Not as many animals on offer than we have seen lately suggesting supplies might be shortening.

There were 341 Store & Breeding Cattle on offer, a number swollen by a special entry of 40 Cows with Calves from Messrs Hazlehurst of Adlington.

These attracted a great deal of interest with cow and calf outfits to £4000 and a Crossbred Stock bull making £7100.

In the regular Store Cattle section trade was firmer with Steers to £2200 averaging £1610, heifers to £2600 averaging £1497 and Feeding Bulls to £1400 averaging £1340.

The finished cattle section assembled 146 head with trade distinctly better than we have seen for a while.  Top figures 439p and £3014 with the average for the 67 heifers 352.1p and £2165 per head.

There was a decent entry of 95 OTM cattle with the best on offer to 317p/kg and £2879 per head. The average a solid 242.4p and £1565 per head.

46 Calves this week with prices still beyond belief, Bulls to £880 and heifers to £660.

In the sheep section numbers were sparse and trade strong.

There were 415 Spring Lambs selling to 562p/kg and 249.66 per head.

In terms of SQQ average this was a superb 503.2 pence making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg bracket worth £215.19.

Hoggs continue to dwindle as one might expect with just 224 on offer.

The best to 462p and £251.48 the SQQ emerging at 405.7p making a typical hogg in the 39-45kg bracket worth £194.66.

A modest entry of 257 Cull Sheep looked well sold with ewes to £236 to average £154.62.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

Only 341 head this week suggesting that numbers are in decline.  We have had some very full markets in recent weeks and it is possible that there are not as many cattle still to come as some might have thought.

In any event trade seems to have strengthened and was particularly fierce in Bakewell today.

The proceedings commenced with a special entry of 40 cows with calves at foot from Messrs Hazelhurst Bros of Adlington, Cheshire.

Bidders had responded to the pre-sale publicity and the ring was packed.

The mainly Blue x Suckler Cows with Lim Calves at Foot peaked at £4000 for the best outfit with no fewer than 15 families breaking the £3000 barrier.
