Bakewell Market Report 2021-05-17

A full house for Store Cattle and decent entries of Finished and OTM too.

Sheep numbers well down with very few hoggs and Spring lambs slow to come forward after the cold dry Spring.

There were 551 Store & Breeding Cattle with recent price levels maintained.  Steers reached £1,350 with heifers £1,320 and Feeding Bulls £1,300.

A few more Breeding Cattle on offer with Cows & Calves to £1,950 and in-calvers to £1,280.

119 Finished Cattle peaking at 269p and £1,700 the average for the 47 heifers looked particularly good at 223.1p.

The 123 OTM & Feeding cows also put up a good performance with top figures 220 pence and £1,410.  The average was a useful 139.1p.

Sheep were very thin on the ground with only 190 Spring lambs forward.  What was lacking in numbers was made up for in value with the best to 402 pence and £171.11.  The SQQ average was 373.3p.

The supply of Old Season Lambs (Hoggs) has virtually dried up with only 203 on offer.

The best made 314p and £161.16 and the SQQ average for a rather mixed sample was 294.0p.

The same numbers as last week and a very similar overall average with a buyer less at ringside.  There are however plenty of bidders for all the cows on offer with the processors and breeders all competing for the offering, 18 individual buyers today creating 21 accounts.

Top 5 today over £2 with a high of 220p for a tremendously well-fed Blue x cow from Brian & Harold Ponsonby, Tideswell Moor to gross £1636.

Top 16 over 172p.  Natives had Herefords to 154p, Shorthorns to 135p, Angus to 147p and Lincoln Red to 152p.

The heifers always ring the bells at Bakewell with some super cattle at the top end.  Stan & Geoff Evans returned to the market with a pen of 4 best heifers and sold to 269p or £1700 for a shapey, well fed Limousin with his others at 262p and 258p.  Messrs Hollinshead had 258p for their best with Keith Harrop at 254p.  Angus to 210p, Hereford to 206p and Dairy x MRI at 201p.

Trade holding up well in the face of price reductions in the deadweight world.

It seems the rain and the warmer conditions have allowed buyers to keep buying and there were some new names on the purchasers list clearly as a result of some grass growth.

The proceeds were to be donated to the Children’s Heart Department at Leicester Hospital.

A very good attendance of butchers and wholesalers saw prices still very brisk for the quality lambs on offer.  Bernard Archer topped the market with a pen of 7 Texel weighing 37kg and making 402p/kg with a second pen at 398p/kg. Best heavy lambs grossed £171/head.  The overall average 373.34p/kg
