Another hot one with the temperature up to 26 degrees.

Reports of rain dances being performed in the Peak District, but no evidence of success.

Worrying news about Bluetongue in the South West, Winter fodder being fed on some farms, but no sign of stock being sold because of lack of keep.

Market entries only 512 cattle and 1,081 sheep.

Store & Breeding cattle in short supply with demand very strong and a tremendous trade for all of the 213 on offer.

The store trade was outstanding with steers to £2,400 ave £1,690 and heifers to £2,320 ave £1,677.

Don’t forget that these averages include all the young and small cattle from the early part of the sale.

Feeding bulls reached £1,800 and cows & calves from a moorland farm to £2,080.

A decent show of 124 finished cattle sold on a stronger trade with prices well up to the mark, top figures 448p/kg and £3,196 with the average for the 63 heifers at a healthy 368.4p and £2,156 per head.

OTM cattle hard to find with just 88 on offer.

Top figures 338p/kg and £3,698 per head.

The overall average a solid 250.1 pence per head.

A bumper crop of calves with 87 on offer.  Prices still hard to believe with bulls to £920 and heifers £830.

Over in the sheep department there were 817 lambs with prices easier as is usual at this time of year.

Top figures 368p/kg and £186 per head.

The SQQ average was 319.3p and the overall average to include the heavier lambs was 322.5p.

This makes a typical lamb on the 39-45 bracket worth £136.60.

247 cull ewes on offer with the best to £259 to average a hefty £173.43.

• Once unloaded, all livestock movements are under the direction and control of the Market Drovers.

• Vendors may assist with livestock movement at the discretion of the Drovers.

• Any assistance is voluntary, undertaken at the vendors own risk and must be in accordance with Drover instruction.

• We advise that Purchasers/Hauliers seek Drover assistance prior to loading cattle/sheep.

• If Purchasers/Hauliers choose to load livestock without Drover assistance, they do so voluntarily and at their own risk.

• It is the Purchasers/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

Similar numbers but trade a little bit harder today with some deadweight quotations being pulled back on the week, trade was a little bit more selective.  1^st cow in the ring was a lovely 52 month old Limousin from Maurice Howe, Moorwood Moor at 338p (£2501) with a clean heifer from David Smith at 338p and other better sorts 290p+.

A slightly improved average with the clean cattle better to sell but the bulls a little harder work.

24 Bulls Ave 352.5p

A little harder work but still plenty of bidding amongst the buyers but at slightly lower levels.  Ben Jones had the pick of the bulls at 402p (£2822) with Josh Hall & Mark Sweetmore at 400p each.

Stronger money for all shapes and sizes with a lot more appetite amongst the regulars.  Misk farm topped with pure Blonds at 407p closely followed by Frank Kunica (T/A Belper Skip Hire) at 404p.  10 natives saw Angus to 372p and Herefords to 364p.

Good numbers and my word, what a trade! With all looking well sold with 20 over £4/kilo.  Ben Langton winning the gold medal at 448p with a stunning Limmy, Josh Hall wins silver at 434p and Phil Watson in the bronze medal spot at 426p with his others at 419 and 416p.  Big heifers from Nick Hollinshead topped the day at £2806 for a 678kg red Limmy.  23 natives saw Hereford (suckler bred) at 403p and Angus to 376p.

The top bull calf of the day was a Lim from G & M Limer at £920.

Heifer calves topped at £830 for a very stylish British Blue from G & M Limer.

To take special note is a strong Hereford bull calf at £595 from AP Critchlow.

An easier lamb trade in line with the national trend but still well bid for throughout and an average would still compare favourably with other Monday markets.

Best sold today would be the bigger well finished types with tops of 368p/kg and £186/head.

Purchasers out in force and trade good from start to finish.  As detailed last week buyers for everything from the best strong and long continentals to the small grazing types.

A feature of the sale today would be the leaner Mules to either kill or feed.  Better frames in this category nearly £150 with others close behind.

Top price today £259 for Messrs Furness & Taylor for 3 different pens then Tom Hodgkinson & Family at £255 together with the Renshaws at the same price all for Texels & Texel x.

Plenty of strong continental £206 plus.

The bigger framed fleshy Mules £160-£182.  Medium framed but well fleshed Swales to £119.

Spirited bidding in the tups again with Maurice & Jo topping the day at £251 and another at £212 for Texels.
