Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

A very busy market with a particularly large entry of 2,100 sheep to accompany the 605 cattle on offer.

Concerns about the keep situation and worries about Blue Tongue disease have clearly motivated vendors marketing stock.

Whilst the worst reports about Blue Tongue are coming from the South West it is now evident that the virus is present virtually everywhere and there are many reports of cases in Derbyshire & Staffordshire.

Our advice remains the same – TALK TO YOUR VET

The only protection for your stock is vaccination, but if you see any animals with clinical signs of the disease you must also inform your vet.  Blue Tongue Is a notifiable disease and treatment needs to be administered fast.

There was a much larger entry of 341 stores – advance warning of which attracted additional long range buyers.

Trade was outstanding with steers to £2,500 ave £1,674, heifers to £2,260 ave £1,554, feeding bulls to £2,250 and pedigree Limousin stock bulls to £3,350.

Despite the lack of keep there seems to be plenty of demand for store cattle.

Finished cattle numbers looked good at 132 with trade solid from start to finish.

Top figures 464p and £3,450, with the average for the 55 heifers very healthy at 367.5 pence and £2,264 per head.

There were 79 OTM cattle on offer with trade distinctly easier.

Top figures 320p/kg and £2,869 with the average well down at 228.7 pence.

53 calves this week with prices still at remarkable levels, bulls to £825 and heifers £630.

Over in the sheep department there were a total of 2,100 on offer and despite the very large entry prices were remarkably good.

The 1,541 lambs reached top prices of 370p/kg and £216.32 per head.

The SQQ average was 320.2p and the overall – including all the heavier lambs was 322.1p.  This made a typical lamb in the 39-45kg bracket worth £137.35.

A big number of cull sheep forward with 524 on offer.  Ewes sold to £279 to average £145.83.

• Vendors/Hauliers are responsible for livestock until safely loaded onto the docks. It is the Vendor/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

• Once unloaded, all livestock movements are under the direction and control of the Market Drovers.

• Vendors may assist with livestock movement at the discretion of the Drovers.

• Any assistance is voluntary, undertaken at the vendors own risk and must be in accordance with Drover instruction.

• We advise that Purchasers/Hauliers seek Drover assistance prior to loading cattle/sheep.

• If Purchasers/Hauliers choose to load livestock without Drover assistance, they do so voluntarily and at their own risk.

• It is the Purchasers/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

• Please ensure that pass-out documentation matches animal identification prior to loading.

Yes, less money across the board but the biggest drop was seen in the lean B/W cows.  Better end coloured cows faired well by comparison.  A 1 calf, 28 month old B Blue x from Jonathon Hall, Longnor to 320p with older cows to 311p or £2071 from Steven Jones.  Plenty of farmer buyers at ringside looking for cows to feed and keeping the trade solid for that commodity.

A solid trade once again with a lift in the best quality butchers sorts and a few extra bulls on offer to meet extra demand.

37 Bulls Ave 334.6p

Good demand and a solid price with the bigger bulls attracting a distinct premium.  The Wells family had 2 of the best today at 417 and 413p both £2800 with these being split at 414p by a lovely Limmy from Sue & Charles Jeffery.  2 big lads over 3k today and up to £3450 (375p) for a powerhouse from Frank Longden, Chinley.

Solid money for all with a good mix of continental, natives and B/W on offer.  Messrs Hazledine farms, Watnall had the pick and only one over £4 at 409p with the better fed types 370p plus.  10 natives had Angus to 370p and 3 B/W topped at £3.

55 Heifers Ave 367.5p/kg

The barometer of trade shows a healthy average at 367p with the top 3 good enough for any Summer show over 450p.  The Wells family won the day at 464p, new vendor to Bakewell Ian Bosworth, Newark had 460p and Josh Hall at 456p. 10 more over 400p.  19 Natives saw Angus to 390p and Herefords to 376p.

A decent entry of 341 store & breeding cattle sold at remarkable prices in view of the shortage of keep and the worries about the Blue Tongue disease.

There was a packed ring of buyers with some additional faces present attracted by the largest entry for some weeks.

Black & Whites possibly dearer than ever with Holsteins to £255 and older Friesians to £500, many more could have been sold to advantage.

A very good entry of 2100 sheep included 1549 lambs.  Despite double the number of lambs on offer trade still very brisk throughout with the bigger meated lambs looking especially well sold on the day.

Best butchers lambs sold to 370p/kg with heavyweights to 358p/kg and overweights to 348p/kg top gross of £216/head.

Overall average 322.13p/kg.

An excellent entry of ewes with trade good from start to finish and all categories well bid for.

The well shaped, long and best continentals regularly £245 and above with a top price of £279 for Andrew & Jill Gagie and David Wartig at £260 again with Texels.

Generally, big Mules £160 plus but too much fat in any category does limit the bidders and over fat good are always discounted.

In the horned ewes better sorts £118 and above with stronger frames nicely over £125 per head.

In the Suffolks better end goods nicely over £200.

The best 8 pens of strong ewes averaged a very pleasing £252.76.

In the tups trade good with some big framed Texels well over £200 to a top of £250.

The average really reflects a higher proportion of grazing types.
