Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Cooler conditions and individual spots of rain reported in some parishes, but no signs of a flood.

Stock entries good with 671 cattle and 1,660 sheep on offer from a total of 219 vendors.

The Blue tongue situation continues to worsen with cases being reported in Derbyshire and Staffordshire.  All stock arriving at market are carefully inspected to ensure no unfit animals are presented for sale.

Trade solid in all departments with store cattle particularly dear.

Some commentators of the opinion that they were the dearest for quite some time.

Steers sold to £2,460 to average £1,537 for a sample that included some very small and plain sorts selling below the £1,000 mark.

Heifers reached £2,200 to average £1,491, again for a selection which included several consignments of very small cattle.

Feeding bulls topped at £2,050 to average £1,368.

In the breeding section cows & calves sold to £3,050 for 4 separate outfits.

Finished cattle were out in force with 156 on offer.  Top figures 472p/kg and £3,173 per head.

Our usual yardstick being the average for the 61 heifers was a decent 355.6p and £2,140 per head.

OTM cattle in short supply with only 66 forward and trade about the same as last week.

Top figures 366.0p/kg and £2,637 per head.

The average was 224.4p/kg and £1,557 per head.

Calf numbers back a bit with only 39 on offer – trade still very strong with bulls to £845 and heifers £660.

Over in the sheep section things were a little quieter than last week with £1,660 on offer. The 1,418 lambs were a mixed sample with some not as well finished as others, no doubt a result of the grass situation.

Top figures 375p/kg and £195.62 per head.

The SQQ average was 312.2p and the overall which includes the heavier lambs 313.9 pence.

This makes a typical lamb in the 39-45kg weight range worth £132.98.

Always difficult to tell how a Monday market compares with other outlets until later in the week.

Please note we have updated our policies regarding the unloading and loading livestock:

• Vendors/Hauliers are responsible for livestock until safely loaded onto the docks. It is the Vendor/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

• Once unloaded, all livestock movements are under the direction and control of the Market Drovers.

• Vendors may assist with livestock movement at the discretion of the Drovers.

• Any assistance is voluntary, undertaken at the vendors own risk and must be in accordance with Drover instruction.

• We advise that Purchasers/Hauliers seek Drover assistance prior to loading cattle/sheep.

• If Purchasers/Hauliers choose to load livestock without Drover assistance, they do so voluntarily and at their own risk.

• It is the Purchasers/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

• Please ensure that pass-out documentation matches animal identification prior to loading.

Less cows on offer with trade scaring one or two away as we have been telling you for so long that they have been so dear.  Just a re correction in the price in the leanest end but a new buyer at ringside kept the regulars well up to the ‘new mark’.  Trade little changed on the week in all honesty with the best end still excellent but the leaner end of the B/W proving hardest to shift.  Trade peaked at 366p (£2203) for a 39 month old Limousin from Keith Harrop with a 1 calf 3yo cow from Messrs Matkin at 322p and a couple of Lims from Jonothan Bolshaw at 320p.

The average is less but more bulls on offer which are harder to sell.  Best clean cattle are still amazing at the top end and possibly even dearer.

46 Bulls Ave 306.7p

More bulls but less life to the trade which appears to be the story nationally.  Best sorts to 396p/kg for a Limmy from Josh Hall, Longnor with the better end of the heavy weight bulls 335-380p.

Trade sharp throughout with a distinct difference between the best (generally 380-430p) and the dairy bred and non F/A types that at times were under 340p.  John Grummett had the pick at 430p (£2709) with Ben Langton at 420p and Steven Jones at 410, 408p etc.  10 Natives sold to 344p for an Angus.

The best are unreal with the butchers working hard for the handy weighted posh sorts.  Hazledine Farms won the gold medal today at 472p (£2822) for a lovely Limousin (598kg) closely followed by Phil & Emma Watson at 452p.  4 more over 440p for David Goddard, Josh Hall and Nick Hollinshead with another trio over 400p.  16 natives had Angus to 350p.

Good to see the entry back above 400 at 410 which makes the journey more worthwhile for our long range buyers.

Trade very strong from start to finish with the small and young cattle setting the tone for the rest of the sale.

No evidence of the weather/keep situation affecting prices negatively with all types in great demand.

A good show of 1660 head of sheep included 1418 new season lambs.  Best fed sorts still in demand with plenty of buyers forward.  The top price 375p/kg twice for Andrew Gagie & Sam Galtrey with numerous other pens over 350p/kg. The leaner grass fed sorts harder to sell. The overall average 313.97p/kg.

Less about this week with the best nearly as good a trade, but the grazers and plain types harder to sell.

Top price a single Texel at £260 from Phil Wilton with Connor Titterton at £258 again with a Texel.

There were no really powerful Suffolks forward but crossbred Suffolks well over £175.

Not many hill types forward with some smaller Swales around £100 per head and Woodlands to nearly £140/head.

Some fair runs of plain but well framed crossbred ewes £125-£140 and the prolonged dry weather starting to bite.

In the rams the best to £188 for a Char with other continentals at £146.
