Bakewell Market Report Monday 24th August

A full house in advance of the Bank Holiday week with 793 cattle and 1,752 sheep on offer from a total of 226 vendors.

Trade solid in all sections with store cattle again very dear, lambs up on the week, Finished cattle holding their own and OTM cattle down a bit.

There was a capacity entry of store & breeding cattle with a total of 541 on offer.

The sale commenced with a special entry of 15 cow & calf outfits from RM Calcott of Tamworth.  These attracted particular interest with examples at £4,000, £3,650, £3,600 and 4 at £3,500.

The pedigree Limousin Stock Bull from the same farm made £3,000.

In the regular run of store cattle steers reached £2,320 ave £1,596, heifers £2,220 ave £1,398 and pure Lim feeding bulls £2,350.

There was plenty of interest from start to finish with all types well bid for not least several runs of weaned calves that looked very well sold.

A few less finished cattle on offer with 88 in total.  Top prices 426p/kg and £2,937 per head.

The average for the 48 heifers was a solid 363.4 pence and £2,265 per head.

There were 82 OTM cattle this week with trade a shade easier.

Top figures 308p/kg and £2,544 per head.

The average 217.0p and £1,494 per head.

52 calves on offer with prices showing no sign of easing, bulls to £840 and heifers £685.

A decent entry of 1,342 finished lambs saw prices up on the week.  Top figures 378p/kg and £194.38 per head.

The SQQ average was 321.1 pence making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg bracket worth £137.88.

A larger entry of 400 cull sheep with ewes to £285 to average £131.66 for a selection which included a good many plain sorts.

A few extras on offer with passengers being offloaded as the grass situation becomes severe.

The average is about 7 pence less on the week which looks in line with the national trends but as Bakewell is a green (restricted) market, the feeding buyers put a good base in the trade to keep the feeding cows looking well sold.  Best price was a Blue x heifer, 31 mnths from Messrs Bryer, Turnditch with the best cow at 304p (£1939) for a Blond from Stuart Mycock, Flagg.  Better end generally 250-280p.

A good run and some real quality at the top end.  Tom & Jack Gratton, Riber ‘The Gratton Boys’ had a show heifer at 420p which was purchased by Joe Kemp, Butchers at Hayfield.  Frankie Kunica was in the money with heifers also at 418p selling to Ian Meakin, Butchers in Leek.

A very diverse entry with several big runs of grazing ewes sold later in the day and plainer types in all breeds and sizes looking well sold on the week and vendors well rewarded.

The biggest and shapely top 15% good to sell to a top of £285 for the Swift Family at Red House.  Best neat Texels and Beltex £250 for the Broughs and £240 plus for the Andrews Family and Swift Family.

Good small runs and continental crosses £180 plus with a few Scotties and smaller types looking a good trade in the £100-£118 bracket as these better types were only half meated and medium framed.

Plenty of men out for grazers with Stuart Hudson up to £120 for Mules (correct below) showing hard Summer conditions North of Ashbourne.
