Bakewell Market Report Monday 7th September

A catch up market after than Bank Holiday week with 704 cattle and 1,470 sheep on offer.

Trade good in all departments with lambs a better trade and both finished and OTM cattle a shade dearer.

A decent entry of 442 store & breeding cattle attracted buyers from far and near with representatives from Wales, Northamptonshire and North Yorkshire together with a strong line up of regulars.  Steers reached £2,500 ave £1,669, heifers to £2,340 ave £1,548 and feeding bulls to £1,620.

Trade for stores looks to be set fair so if you have cattle to sell do not hesitate to let us know.

133 finished cattle this week, top figures 432p/kg and £3,282 per head.

The average for the 49 heifers was a healthy 358.1 pence and £2,167 per head.

61 calves on offer with trade remaining very strong, bulls to £1,060 and heifers £950.

In the sheep section there was plenty of demand for the 1,100 lambs on offer.

Top figures 376p/kg and £212.16.  The SQQ average was an excellent 330.9 pence.

This made typical lambs in the 39-45 kg bracket worth £139.72.

Another good turnout of 341 cull sheep sold on a lively trade with ewes reaching £292 to average £148.72 for a sample that matched plenty of leaner sorts.

  • Once unloaded, all livestock movements are under the direction and control of the Market Drovers.

 

 

  • Vendors may assist with livestock movement at the discretion of the Drovers.

 

  • Any assistance is voluntary, undertaken at the vendors own risk and must be in accordance with Drover instruction.

 

  • We advise that Purchasers/Hauliers seek Drover assistance prior to loading cattle/sheep.

 

 

  • If Purchasers/Hauliers choose to load livestock without Drover assistance, they do so voluntarily and at their own risk.

 

  • It is the Purchasers/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

A full compliment of buyers led to a marginally better trade, the average showing 3 pence lift on the week which is certainly encouraging to see.  Better end nicely over 250 pence including 4 over £3.  Overage clean to 310 pence for a 1 calf slip Simmental from CJ Stone, Buxton with another Blue from D Critchlow  at 304p and a Limmy cow from Andrew Carr also at 304p.  Grazing and farmer feeders all looking for cows all looking for cows to improve and this would make up a big part of the entry today.

Better numbers than a fortnight ago and a sharp trade throughout with a good run of commercial cattle with a few better sorts for the butchers amongst them.

 

46 Bulls Ave 329.8p

Better numbers and with a new order at ringside trade was fast from start to finish.  4 best over 400p and a high of 428p for a pure Limmy sort from The Wells Family, Monyash with a couple from Catherine Potter at 421 and 405p and Josh Hall had 402p all with suckler bred and shapey sorts.  Heavy well fed bulls 360-390p with 14 dairy B/W’s in the entry today with the best of these 275-296p.

Numbers good but more could have been well sold and trade strong from start to finish.  Yet again at Bakewell a very diverse entry from the big and stylish to the small and needing further grazing/feeding.

Top call £292 for smart continentals from Craig Wint & family at Alton.

Generally, all types good to sell with the better types with good shape and finish regularly £230 and above.

Stronger Suffolks but not the finest nicely over £200 per head and better Mules over £150.

The top 10 pens averaged £262.

Plenty of grazing types very well bid for, very few rams today with a strong Shropshire x from Richard Spencer at £182.
