Bakewell Market Report Monday 28th September

Another strong offering of stock in all departments with a total of 720 cattle and 2,116 sheep.

 

A much increased entry of finished cattle totalling 156 head which comprised 47 bulls and 109 clean with Oliver reporting all types an excellent trade, bulls to 431p/kg and £3,159 in the lump and heifers to 450p/kg and £2,948.

 

A few less OTM’s at 105 and again trade excellent for all with an average at 243.44p/kg with tops of 352p/kg and £2,684 whilst cull bulls to 356p/kg and £3,446.

 

Stores back a little in terms of numbers on last week but still very respectable totalling 422 and trade equally as good as recent weeks which saw steers to £2,510 and heifers to £2,340.

 

An excellent entry of sheep with a total of 2,116 which saw 1,481 lambs on a similar trade to last week returning an SQQ average of 328.39p/kg with tops of 380p/kg and £199/head.  An excellent gathering of cull ewes saw tops of £248.

 

Later this week sees 2,894 breeding ewes entered for Friday and 562 rams for Saturday and going forwards store lambs the following Friday 9th October and HPLS the week after with suckled calves on the Friday and Hill Sheep on the Saturday.

  • Vendors/Hauliers are responsible for livestock until safely loaded onto the docks. It is the Vendor/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

 

  • Once unloaded, all livestock movements are under the direction and control of the Market Drovers.

 

 

  • Vendors may assist with livestock movement at the discretion of the Drovers.

 

  • Any assistance is voluntary, undertaken at the vendors own risk and must be in accordance with Drover instruction.

 

  • We advise that Purchasers/Hauliers seek Drover assistance prior to loading cattle/sheep.

 

 

  • If Purchasers/Hauliers choose to load livestock without Drover assistance, they do so voluntarily and at their own risk.

 

  • It is the Purchasers/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

 

 

  • Please ensure that pass-out documentation matches animal identification prior to loading.

Better sold again with a full line up of buyers and they certainly had to work hard to secure their cows today.  Best young and feeding types were best sold today with a 30 month old Charolais heifer at 352p for feeding with the best cow at 301p for a Limousin from Andrew, Helen & Tim Carr at Waterfall.  Better meated generally 270-300p with a number of leaner cows sold to an army of feeding buyers.

A bumper show after last weeks disappointing numbers and trade on fire, it has moved fast in the last month with returns now nicely at about last years mark.

 

47 Bulls Ave 347.9p (up 8 pence)

Good numbers with Bakewell proving to be a bull market once again.  8 best over 420 pence and a trio of stronger bulls over £3000.

Messrs Potter, Bonsall rose to the top at 431p or £3025 with their pure Blond with other good bulls nicely north of £4/kg.  10 B/W’s to 321p.

A very good entry and customers for all types.

Plenty of strong ewes £204-£248 per head with Charlotte Hadfield topping the day at £248 and Harry Young at the same price all with Texels or Texel crosses.  Better end Suffolks on the £200 mark but no pure heavy Suffolks forward.

Better end Mules £150 plus.  Yet again, a large number of purchasers for grazers and plain ewes with both the Texel crosses, Mules and horned types a fast trade.  Several pens of strong meated Swales around £140/head.

Goats to £149.

A mixed entry of tups with all the best £195 and above.

Cheviots to £195 and Texels to £230
