Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 5th October

Decent entries with 1,676 sheep and 703 cattle on offer, particularly encouraging bearing in mind the number of potential vendors under 6 day restriction after all the recent breeding sheep sales.

Trade solid in all departments with plenty of highlights for the top quality specimens.

A good show of 423 store & breeding cattle with all types in great demand.

Steers sold to £2,420, heifers £2,180 and feeding bulls to £1,800.

In the breeding section cows and calves hit £3,020 and £3,000 with young Angus stock bulls to £2,020 and in calf heifers to £2,300.

Strong numbers of finished cattle with 146 in total and a solid trade throughout.  Top figures 442p/kg and £2,997 per head.

Our regular barometer of trade, the average for the 59 heifers was 377.1 pence per kilo and a useful £2,289 per head.

92 OTM cattle this week with top figures 393p/kg and £2,886 per head.

The average looked particularly healthy at 249.1 pence/kilo and £1,679 per head.

Calf numbers steady at 42 with trade little changed and bulls topping at £825 and heifers to £650.

In the sheep section numbers were good with 1,171 lambs on offer.

Trade firm, but not quite as exciting as the recent trade for breeding sheep and rams.  Top prices 387p/kg and £199.39 per head.

The SQQ was a substantial 325p/kg, making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg weight bracket worth £139.87.

497 Ewes & Rams

Auctioneers Mark Elliott & Holly Swift

With a good run of ewes forward there was something for everybody from big & stylish to small and feedable.

New vendors present and well rewarded with a top price of £284 for David Furness with the Hamplett Family at Church Eaton with their best at £270.

Very big Mules well past £170 and plenty of strong continentals £185 and above.

Yet again, plenty of bidders for grazers and lean types with small end plain Mules around £100 to feed on further.

The average well up on last week reflecting a better proportion of strong continentals within the entry when compared to the last 3 trading weeks.

Only 10 slaughter rams forward to a top of £201 with Suffolks strong and meated to £198.

Ewes ave £140.34

Rams ave £166.30
