Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 26th October

After a weekend of wild weather Monday dawned wet, but thankfully not so windy.

Lamb numbers suffered as a consequence of 6 day stand stills coupled with Sunday’s foul weather when it was not fit to turn a dog out let alone sheep.

The result 847 cattle and 1,207 sheep forward.

It was also Farmers MOT Day with a great many NHS and other experts on site to perform tests and offer advice.

We are indeed fortunate at Bakewell to have this service which is much appreciated by all.

The store & breeding cattle section had a special entry of Pedigree Limousins from Clark Farms of Ringinglow, maiden heifers reached £4,100 to average £3,868.

The 21 month old stock bull, Mayfields Aaron sold at £5,650.

In the regular stores steers hit £2,480 with the average £1,660, heifers to £2340 to average £1,608 and feeding bulls sold to £1,880.

A good show of 161 finished cattle which were slightly harder to sell, but the figures still looked good.

Top price 443p and £3,282 per head.

The average for the 62 heifers was a solid 373.9 pence and £2,274 per head.

In the OTM section 111 head were on offer, top figures 388p/kg and £2,937 per head.

The average was a hefty 244.7p and a healthy £1,725 per head.

Calves only 39 on offer, but well sold with bulls to £780 and heifers to £730

In the sheep section the smaller numbers sharpened the trade with the 694 lambs selling to 384p and £204.40/head.

The SQQ average was a useful 337.1 pence making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg weight range worth £144.13.

Cull sheep were out in reasonable numbers with 489 on offer.

Ewes sold to £328 to average £119.31 for a very mixed assortment.

489 Ewes & Rams

Auctioneers Mark Elliott & Holly Swift

Another strong entry and yet again something for everyone.

The best ewes flying away above £250 with a top of £328 for Messrs Boden & Davies.

Best end Mules £180 plus with the biggest in the £190 range.

A very wide range of grazing ewes present from small horned breeds to lean crossbred Texels and buyers for everything with ewes going away to feed above £140 per head but in fairness some very small types £155 plus.

The best 8 pens averaged £261.25 with plenty of pens £180 and above.

Slaughter rams very good to sell with Jeff Turner at £300 and Robert Walker at £265 with a Suffolk.

Generally, the average reflects a large proportion of grazing sorts but trade strong in all sections.
