Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 07-06-2021

Despite a great many farmers being busy with silage making and sheep shearing Bakewell attracted good numbers of stock with 648 Cattle and 1,166 Sheep.

Trade was exceptional in all departments with outstanding prices for finished cattle and finished lambs and a record average for OTM’s.

The Store & Breeding cattle section was well supported with 430 head on offer and some marvellous prices achieved.

Steers sold to £1,260, Heifers £1,235 and Feeding Bulls £1,110.

In the Breeding Cattle department Cows & Calves peaked at £1,580 and the 5 Stock Bulls made up to £2,300.

In the Finished Cattle ring demand completely outstripped supply with 76 on offer.

Top figures 278p and £1,771.  The overall average for all the Finished Cattle was an astonishing 229.4p.

Things were just as buoyant in the OTM ring with 75 animals selling at up to 209p and £1,626 with the average which must be a record at 156.0p.

If you have Finished Cattle to market or OTM animals ready go, speak to Oliver Hiles on 07801 530899.

Calves were out in greater numbers with 67 forward and trade sparkling, Bulls to £400 and Heifers £402.

The news was just as good in the sheep department, 471 new season lambs sold on a cracking trade with top figures 385p and £173.25.  With the SQQ average 333p this makes the top price an average lamb in the 39-45kg bracket £138.58.

Only a few old season lambs (Hoggs) with the best on offer to 310p and £184.44, the average for them was 247.3p.

There was a much larger entry of cull sheep with a tremendous trade from start to finish with a total of 354 on sale.   Ewes reached £159 to average £113.28 enough said.
