Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Despite the good harvesting weather, a respectable entry of stock was forward totalling 577 cattle and 967 sheep with a robust trade in all sections.

280 Store Cattle together with 71 Breeding Stock continued to sell at recent strong rates, with a good trade for all offer.

Top prices of £1195 for Steers, £1180 for Heifers and Cows with Calves at foot to £1960.

97 Finished Cattle followed a similar trend being in keen demand with Heifers to 268p/kg and grossing £1608 with Steers to 252p/kg and a total top price of £1701.

A reduced entry of OTM Cattle saw those forward rewarded with respectable returns to tops of 198p/kg and £1475.

A further increase in calf numbers also sold at recent strong prices with a B Blue bull to a top of £450.

Spring Lamb numbers continue to increase with a very respectable average at 315p/kg, well up on last year with ewes again in keen demand to £154 and returning an average of just over £104 per head.

52 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows Overall Average 146.1p

Cows are very, very dear at present with numbers tight nationally and demand for processing meat strong.  When this level of trade exists, the only way to market your cows is on their legs at Bakewell Livestock Market.  Prices peaked at 198p for an overage heifer (36 mnths) from WI Fletcher, Sheldon with best cows at 194p for Messrs Pears, Penistone and 191p for the Brough’s at Monyash.  Top 11 over 170p with plenty more 150-170p.

22 Black & White and ex-dairy cows Ave 124.1p/kg

Actually, dearer on the week with the majority of today’s plainer sorts.  Two lovely Friesian Cows from Messrs Webster sold at 161p or £1207 and 158p or a remarkable £1475.

Plain start from the parlour cows generally 100-120p.

 OTM Bulls

97 FINISHED CATTLE – overall average 222.7p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

Better numbers after the small entry last week and trade equally as dear as we have seen them.

12 Finished Bulls ave 206.4p/kg

Only 12 on offer, and what a shame after last week’s records.  Trade today peaked at 254p for a John Ottewell special, with Nigel at 251 and 242p for his pair.

23 Steers – overall average 224.9p/kg

A wonderful trade for all the clean cattle today with the top 4 Steers over 250p and riding to 252p for Peter Shaw with Messrs Hazledine trio all over 250p.

62 Finished Heifers – overall average 224.9p/kg

Exactly the same average for Steers as Heifers and again some lovely cattle in the entry that rung the bells.  Stuart Wainwright, Poynton showed a superb Blue x heifer at 268p to gross £1608.  5 other best heifers topped 150p with another 11 over 240p.  16 Natives today with Hereford and Angus topping at 219p.

 STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Mark Elliott)

A good entry of 350 for a silage day in June and plenty of buyers with orders to fill.

Highlights included Cow & Calf outfits to £1740 & £1960, Stock Bulls to £1600 and Young Bulls to £1910.

70 Breeding Cattle

A very varied entry but some very good outfits from Don Bailey, Sutton on the Hill and the Wrights at Parwich stole the show.

A very varied entry in terms of size, quality and breed with mid-June seeing the majority of the best and most powerful already traded in the previous months, but trade still very strong.

Trade still strong for all types including those to graze and those to put straight in to feed.

A further increase in numbers forward and another strong trade for all on offer.

Bull saw B Blue to £450 and Salers to £370 with plenty of people looking for both best quality sorts and the second quality alike.

A similar story for the heifers with these regularly £220 plus to a top of £260.

The black & white generally a poorer sample than last week, but again looking a good trade to a top of £235.

967 Sheep including 656 Spring Lambs, 302 Ewes & Rams & 9 Ewes & Lambs

A total entry of 967 sheep included 533 New Season Lambs.  Best meated lambs very keenly bid for with Bernard Archer seeing top price of the day with a pen of 8 selling at 348p/kg with his second pen at 338p/kg.  Top gross today £147.60/head and an overall average of 315.81p/kg.

A total of 93 Old Season Lambs saw meated sorts still in demand to peak at 269p/kg and an overall average 240.94p/kg.

Cull Sheep

In the cull ewes just 302 on offer saw trade very brisk right from the start with a top call of £154 being on the very first lot sold, a Texel ewe.  Best Suffolk ewes sold to £139 with Mules to £118.

 Just 9 Ewes & Lambs this week being very much end of season, but trade very good for all on offer with an overall average of £104/life.
