Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Distinctly busy for a midsummer market with 623 cattle and 1158 sheep on offer although the weather could hardly be described as summery.

Trade particularly good in all departments.  Sheep prices not surprisingly less as more supply becomes available.

The store and breeding cattle section had a decent entry of 389 animals and a wonderful trade for all types.

Steers reached £1370, Heifers £1260 and Feeding Bulls £1280.

In the breeding sections cows and calves reached £1260 and stock bulls £2000.  In calf cows peaked at £1350.

There were 100 Finished cattle forward with another remarkable trade.  Top figures 268p and £1815 with the heifer average 234.0p and the overall figure which included 20 bulls at 225.0p

A useful entry of 120 OTM cattle sold on a fantastic trade with top figures 220p and £2070.

The overall average was an astonishing 154.6p.

Only 33 calves this week, but plenty of demand with bulls to £395 and heifers £345.

Turning to the sheep section lambs were out in force with 869 on offer and prices unable to sustain their recent record levels.

The returns when compared when compared with last year are not to be sniffed at with top figures 317p and £142.29.

The SQQ average emerged at 269.9p

To put things into context the average gross price for lambs in the 39-45kg bracket was £113.82/head.

There were 271 cull sheep with ewes to £149 and the average £108.97

We have been asked to inform you that:

Mr Richard Salisbury, who farmed for many years at Abney and was a member of the Ayrshire Cattle Society, has passed away.

He was a regular at Bakewell for over 70 years and retired to live within a stone`s throw of the market.

He met his wife Jill at a Bagshaws sale, when she was working for the MMB and the next generation of the Salisbury family continue to sell stock at Bakewell.

And also,

John Newton who traded as S Rains and Son Top Hill Farm Ible Grange Mill has passed away aged 85.

He was a well-known character at Bakewell Market, which he had attended for more than 70 years.

102 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows Overall Average 154.68p or £1004.00

Double the entry of last week and a superb average of 154p, but in truth many more could have been sold.  Numbers remain tight and demand is high, so the best place to market your cows to best advantage is to sell them in the Livestock Market at Bakewell.  Top cow today was a tremendous pure Blue cow from Dan Byard, Holmegate that sold for 220p or £1927.

Top 20 cows over 180p with the bigger fed cows generally £1300 – £1500.

An unbelievable average, particularly when you see the cows.

Exactly 100 cattle consisting of 20 bulls, 44 steers and 36 heifers with each and every beast looking well sold and a flyer throughout.

20 Finished Bulls ave 214.1p/kg

A real price with all but 1 continental over 204p and only 3 B/W under £2.  Prices peaked at 249p for a pure Limmy from Roy Mycock to gross £1767.  Keith Harrop had 244p (£1815) and David Goddard 240p (£1809)

44 Steers – overall average 223.2p/kg

A wonderful run of clean cattle today and a fantastic trade throughout.  16 best over 240p and a high of 259p for a superb Lim from John Grummett, Smisby.  Michael Wynne had 257p and Roy Mycock 253p.  3 Shorthorns sold to 218p and 4 Hereford (not F/A) sold to 199p.

36 Finished Heifers – overall average 234.06p/kg

A tremendous show of cattle and look and the average, one of the best ever!  Top 9 over 250p and a high of 268p for a lovely Blue from Steven, Steff and Owen Wells, Monyash and selling to RW Walmsley, Quality Butchers at Catterton, York.  Angus to 215p and Hereford to 218p.

Good numbers for the time of year with 389 head on offer.

Buyers out in force for all types of cattle and any concerns about grass or fodder now well behind us after the wet spell of weather.

A reduced entry continued to sell at very strong rates with B Blue bulls to £395 and Heifers to £345.

All types keenly sought after with Black & White looking well sold with the best to £145

1140 Sheep including 869 Lambs & 271 Ewes & Rams

A total entry of 1140 sheep included a very good entry of 752 new season lambs.  Meated sorts are wanted with a top of 317p/kg and top gross of £142/head.  The half meated and lighter weight sorts much harder to sell with these regularly 250-270p/kg.  The overall average 269.97p/kg

Cull Sheep

In the cull section demand still as good as recent weeks with a pen of pure bred Texels peaking at £166 and Charolais to £155, best heavy Suffolks in the £130-£140 bracket.
