Bakewell Market Report 2021-06-21
Distinctly busy for a midsummer market with 623 cattle and 1158 sheep on offer although the weather could hardly be described as summery.
Trade particularly good in all departments. Sheep prices not surprisingly less as more supply becomes available.
The store and breeding cattle section had a decent entry of 389 animals and a wonderful trade for all types.
Steers reached £1370, Heifers £1260 and Feeding Bulls £1280.
In the breeding sections cows and calves reached £1260 and stock bulls £2000. In calf cows peaked at £1350.
There were 100 Finished cattle forward with another remarkable trade. Top figures 268p and £1815 with the heifer average 234.0p and the overall figure which included 20 bulls at 225.0p
A useful entry of 120 OTM cattle sold on a fantastic trade with top figures 220p and £2070.
The overall average was an astonishing 154.6p.
Only 33 calves this week, but plenty of demand with bulls to £395 and heifers £345.
Turning to the sheep section lambs were out in force with 869 on offer and prices unable to sustain their recent record levels.
The returns when compared when compared with last year are not to be sniffed at with top figures 317p and £142.29.
The SQQ average emerged at 269.9p
To put things into context the average gross price for lambs in the 39-45kg bracket was £113.82/head.
There were 271 cull sheep with ewes to £149 and the average £108.97

Mr Richard Salisbury, who farmed for many years at Abney and was a member of the Ayrshire Cattle Society, has passed away.
He was a regular at Bakewell for over 70 years and retired to live within a stone`s throw of the market.
He met his wife Jill at a Bagshaws sale, when she was working for the MMB and the next generation of the Salisbury family continue to sell stock at Bakewell.
And also,
John Newton who traded as S Rains and Son Top Hill Farm Ible Grange Mill has passed away aged 85.
He was a well-known character at Bakewell Market, which he had attended for more than 70 years.

Double the entry of last week and a superb average of 154p, but in truth many more could have been sold. Numbers remain tight and demand is high, so the best place to market your cows to best advantage is to sell them in the Livestock Market at Bakewell. Top cow today was a tremendous pure Blue cow from Dan Byard, Holmegate that sold for 220p or £1927.
Top 20 cows over 180p with the bigger fed cows generally £1300 – £1500.
