Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 28th June

BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 28th  June

Very busy for the time of year with 679 cattle and 1,226 sheep on offer.

The cattle trade exceedingly strong in all departments and lamb prices having slipped towards the end of the week heading upwards again.

The Store & Breeding cattle section was well supported with 372 head on offer with 60 of these being breeding stock.

A special entry of 10 Lim x Heifers with young calves at foot attracted plenty of interest with the top outfit making £2,480 to average £2095 proof if any were needed that confidence in beef is riding high.

The store trade was generally up again by several notches with steers to £1480, heifers £1410 and feeding bulls £1210.

If you have cattle to sell do not hesitate to give us a call.  Bakewell buyers would like the opportunity to bid for them.

Finished cattle were out in force too with a total of 137 on offer.

Trade extremely fast with top prices 270p and £1765.

The steers and heifers averaged 223.4p.

A very large entry of 134 OTM and Feeding cows maintained or exceeded recent price levels.  Top figures 210p or £1902 per head the average this week a healthy 152.0p

Only 37 calves on offer finding a ready market with bulls to £415 and heifers £380.

In the sheep section there were 759 new season lambs with prices better than expected after trade slipped last week.  The best on offer to 300p/kg and £141.84 with the SQQ looking better at 246.0p/kg.

MIDSUMMER MURDER

The Bagshaws 150 Bike Ride

Saturday 26th June 2021

We are pleased to report that the event was completed more or less as planned.

The weather was ideal and the riders were neither soaked nor cooked and the winds were largely favourable.

The only significant problem was that the sealed tracker device ran out of battery and could not be recharged.  This meant that for the last section of the ride observers had no idea where the riders were until Facebook posts were updated.

We had no mechanical issues, no punctures and unlike the Tour de France no one fell off.

The four principal riders were joined at Buxton by Ed Lawley and Lewis Butler from Bagshaws and at Leek by Peter Hardy of F.C.N who was just getting into his stride as darkness fell.

The main riders being Alastair Sneddon and James Sneddon, John Rees and Mark Ramsden left Bakewell Market at 5.30am and honour was considered satisfied when they reached Tissington at 10.30pm having called at or near the Bagshaws offices and clocked up the necessary 150 miles.

The riders were met at intervals by Lynda Sneddon and Nikki Ramsden and no cyclists have ever been so well fed and watered, which was undoubtably the key to their endurance.

The purpose of the ride was threefold.

Firstly, to celebrate 150 years of Bagshaws.

Secondly, to demonstrate the size of the Bagshaws ‘patch’ And thirdly and most importantly to raise funds for the two leading Agricultural charities namely RABI and FCN.

We would like to thank all those farmers who came out to meet us en route from as early as 6.30am to 10.30pm when we called it a day.  Your support was much appreciated.

We would also like to thank all those who donated so generously, the final figure is yet to be calculated, but is likely to be in excess of £3,000.

134 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows Overall Average 152.01p or £1025.00

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

The biggest entry of cows for a while and the trade was certainly ready for them with a fantastic average as over half the entry being ex dairy cows and some very lean types about.

The general consensus amongst the observers was that the cows were as dear as anyone had ever seen them.  Best cows today topped at 210p for a pure Limousin from Messrs Bennett, Threaphurst with 5 others over 190p and anything meated generally 170p plus.  Herefords sold to 173p, 5 Devons to 166p, Angus to 177p and Longhorns to 170p.

An interesting note: A new vendor had 2 ex dairy cows in the sale today, they averaged £150/head more than his predicted deadweight returns.
