Bakewell Market Report 2021-07-05

A busy day in all departments with prices strong throughout.

122 finished cattle continued to sell at very respectable levels with Bulls to 271p/kg, grossing a top of £1766, Steers to 271p/kg and £1766 and Heifers to 270p/kg and £1683.

A similar story for the OTM’s attracting decent numbers of 103 with top prices of 239p/kg and £1674/head.

Store cattle again out in good numbers totalling 310 and a large gathering of purchasers ensured a strong trade for all, especially the stronger types.  Top priced Steers at £1500 and Heifers at £1485.

A slight increase in sheep numbers with 1362 on offer with lamb trade a little firmer with the average at 248p/kg, well up on last year.

Ewes again commanding an excellent level of demand to a top of £174 and the average at £105 per head.

Calves continuing to sell well with Bulls to £430 and Heifers to £325, with more required to satisfy demand.

103 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows Overall Average 153.2p or £1015.00

Trade remains outstanding with the average still nicely over 150p and all cows looking incredible.  Whilst there is so much demand, surely the place to sell cattle is alive and in the Livestock Market at Bakewell.  Three over £2/kilo today with a superb heifer (31 mnths) from Margaret Heath at 239p or £1649.  Top cow was a 1 calf Limmy (4yrs) at 215p for Messrs Gratton to gross £1668 with another 12 good cows over 180p and a top call of £1674 (184p) for a first-time vendor R Gent, Newark.

Cull Sheep

In the cull section 401 on offer met a tremendous trade for all types, best Texel to £174, Beltex to £156, strong meated Mules in the £110 – £130 bracket, heavy horned ewes in the £85 – £95 bracket and Cheviots to just over £100/head.  The top 10 pens averaged £157.50/head.
