Bakewell Market Report 2021-07-12
A good turnout of stock for what is often a quiet time of year with 602 cattle and 1,804 sheep on offer.
Decent prices reported in all sections with cattle very dear and sheep prices holding up well.
The Store & Breeding Cattle section mustered 291 head and maintained or exceeded recent price levels with steers to £1,620, heifers £1,490, feeding bulls £930 and in the breeding section cow & calf outfits peaked at £2,650 with in calvers to £1,580.

There was an excellent show of 129 finished cattle with top figures 272p and £1,838.
The average for the 55 heifers was 225.6p giving an indication of the strength of trade.
A very respectable entry of 138 Cull & OTM cattle sold on an outstanding trade with top figures 217p & £1,775 per head. The average emerged at a remarkable 1543p/kg and a per head figure of £1,004.

44 Calves this week and more demand than supply indicated by the top prices, bulls to £445 and Heifers £388.
In the Sheep department numbers are on the rise, The 1,135 lambs looked well sold with top figures 266p and £128.86 per head.
The SQQ average was a solid 240p.
Cull sheep were out in force with a total of 615 on offer. Ewes sold to £170 to average £103.92 for a mixed sample.

Bumper numbers and an improved average again, up a penny on the week or just over £1000/head. Demand is still very hot for all cattle and whilst there is so much competition, the only way to market your cattle is on their feet and at the Livestock Market at Bakewell. Top two cows today were pedigree blues from Keith Belfield, Sheen both selling at 217p to gross £1775 and £1566. Limousin cows topped at 205p for Hazelwood Hall Farm with cross bred blues at 198p for JP Wayne. Clean OTM heifers sold at 210p for Dan Byard and 200p for Rob Gratton. All best cows over 180p with plenty more 160-180p. Hereford to 174p, Angus to 170p, Longhorn to 170p and Galloway to 144p.

Unbelievable, both the trade and the fact that we only had 18 bulls to sell. Only two under £2 (both B/W at 199p and 195p) and a top price of 268p and 258p from Roy Mycock and selling to wholesalers in Yorkshire and Lancashire. Hereford to 220p and B/W to 200p twice

A bumper crop of Steers that included 5 B/W’s, 15 Native and 36 Continentals that rung the bells and produced top prices. David & Charlotte Hadfield had 3 of the top 4 prices at 258,251 and 248p/kg all for quality and well fed Limousins. 14 best cattle over 240p and plenty grossing over £1500, Hereford sold to 224p, Angus (not FA) sold to 206p with B/W to 196p.

As usual the Bakewell vendors turned out some special heifers and were well rewarded by an army of butchers and wholesalers at ringside, who all certainly appreciated the quality on offer. 18 best suckler bred sorts topped 240p with Peter Shaw, Stanley at the top of the pile at 272p and 268p. Steven & Steff Wells had 264p for their best with Joe Gibbs up to 258p. 11 Herefords topped at 218p.

In the cull sheep a total of 615 forward saw demand still outstanding for all types. Best Texel ewes peaked at £170 with Char to £163 and Beltex to £150. Heavy Mule ewes sold in the £95-£120 bracket.
