Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2021-07-19

With settled weather and temperatures well up in the 20’s it was definitely a hay making market with vendors dropping off stock early and heading for the hayfields.

It was also the first day of freedom from the official COVID restrictions, however at Bakewell Market we are carrying on with ‘Drop & Go’ and a Watch & Go for vendors to see their stock sold.  As a result, it was business only and we are going to keep it that way for the coming weeks.

Infection rates are still increasing and we have several staff isolating at present.

Despite all of the above there were 490 cattle and 914 sheep on offer and a strong trade reported in all sections.

The Store & Breeding Cattle department mustered 302 head with prices very similar to last week.

There were plenty of highlights with Steers to £1,540 and a remarkable average of £1,013 despite a good many young cattle in the entry.

Heifers peaked at £1,350 with Feeding Bulls to £1,100 and Cow & Calf outfits to £1,380.

The Store cattle demand is underpinned by the trade for Finished Cattle which continues apace.

There were 99 Finished Cattle this week peaking at 276p and £1,836 to average 234.3p overall.  Surely a record for any day other than the Christmas Show week.

The OTM entry was not surprisingly down with grass harvesting taking precedence.   Just 68 this week but reaching 203p and £1,571 to average 150.99p and £967 per head.

Only a few calves on offer with bulls to £400 and heifers £390.

Things were a bit quiet in the sheep section with only 823 lambs forward, but perhaps because of the lighter show trade was brisk.

Lambs sold to 282p and £131.07 with the SQQ average at 251.9p and the overall, which included the heavy lambs at 253.6p indicating the demand for meat.

A very small entry of 90 cull sheep saw ewes to £132 to average £85.94 for a moderate sample.

Plenty of buying power in operation for what was a mixed sample including a good many smaller cattle. Several vendors sent large consignments which allowed large bunches to be sold together.  These certainly attracted a premium and helped shorten the sale time allowing stock to be loaded in a timely fashion a distinct benefit on what was a very warm day.
