Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 09-08-2021

BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 9th August

Despite a wet weekend which provided no encouragement for stock selection there were good numbers of cattle and reasonable numbers of sheep at 670 and 1,052 respectively.

All departments enjoyed a tremendous trade with plenty of highlights to be found throughout this report.

The Store & Breeding cattle section mustered 360 head with plenty of interest at all price levels.  Steers reached £1,490, Heifers £1,440 and Feeding Bulls £980, Cows and Calves peaked at £1,630.

The 124 Finished Cattle were another Bakewell success story with top figures 278p and £1,817 per head.  The 61 Heifers averaged an outstanding 236.8p.

OTM cattle remain in tremendous demand with 113 forward selling to 200p and £1,885 per head.  The average a healthy 146.6p.

Calf numbers on the rise with 73 this week, Bulls to £545 and Heifers £300.

In the Sheep Shed a smaller show of 806 lambs looked very well sold with the best to 272p and grossing £129.12, the overall average was 237.0p.

There were 233 Cull Sheep reaching £154 for the best, but these were somewhat outnumbered by the other sort to produce an average of £91.28.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  1. BANK HOLIDAY MARKET

For the avoidance of doubt and regardless of a misprint in last week’s Farmers Guardian.  The market in the Bank Holiday week will be held on Tuesday 31st August.

  1. SHEEP SALE SOCIAL NIGHT

It is with regret that we have had to cancel the Social Night which was to be held on Thursday 26th August.  In view of the current COVID situation (we have several numbers of our team isolating at present) it does not seem wise to hold the usual gathering.

We will revise the situation at the end of the Sheep Sale season and perhaps celebrate the end rather than the beginning.

Forthcoming Market Fixtures

Thursday 12th August: First Store Lamb Sale, 1,800 entered also Lunchtime Sheep Sale, See our Facebook page for special entries

Other News-Store Cattle List Covers

After many months of thinking up humorous and cryptic front covers for the weekly store list, I have run out of ideas.  So, we are going to try something different.

If you have an entry a future week either send me a photograph or we are more than happy to come out and take one and we will put it on the front of the Store List.
