A good solid market day with 535 cattle and 1,453 sheep.

For the avoidance of doubt next Monday 23^rd August, it is business as usual.  The following week is the Bank Holiday and the market will be held on the Tuesday 31^st August.

There were 310 Store & Breeding Cattle with demand just as strong and prices just as high.

Steers reached £1,570, Heifers £1,365 and Feeding Bulls £900.

One reason why the stores are so dear is the continuing demand for Finished cattle.  This week we had 98 with top figures 271p and £1,975 per head.

The average for the 41 heifers looked good at 233.5p.

The same notes apply to OTM and Feeding cow section where 81 head reached top figures of 206p and £1,452.  The overall average emerging at 145p.

46 calves forward with no shortage of demand, bull and heifers both peaked at £455.

Turning to the sheep department, a bigger show of lambs with 1,192 on offer.

Top figures 276p and £186.44 per head.

Both the SQQ and the overall average were 237p.

Cull sheep-not very plentiful with only 259 on offer.  Ewes sold to £159 to average £95.34 for a very mixed sample.

IMPORTANT NOTES

      SHEEP SALE SOCIAL NIGHT

It is with regret that we have had to cancel the Social Night which was to be held on Thursday 26^th August.  In view of the current COVID situation (we have several numbers of our team isolating at present) it does not seem wise to hold the usual gathering.

We will revise the situation at the end of the Sheep Sale season and perhaps celebrate the end rather than the beginning.

We are now taking entries for the sheep sales of both Store Lambs and Breeding Sheep with the dates set out below.

With finished lambs selling so well and the recent trade for cull ewes with averages consistently over £100 we are anticipating a strong demand for Theaves at our 3rd September Sale.

Hartington Rural Social Group

The group will meet from 2pm-4pm for tea and cake on Tuesday 24th August at Hartington Village Hall.  There will be a VE Trail and history presentation.  All welcome.

81 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows Overall Average 145.1p

Trade continues at a pace with a shortage of cows on offer this week.  Whilst stock is in short supply the best way to market stock is on their legs in the livestock market to a full audience of potential buyers.  Less very good cows today with the better cross bred cows generally over 170p.  A Blue x Cow (1 calf) but underage sold at 206p with the best cows up to 185p for Messrs Simpson, Bradwell.

The average is up again as the beef trade is in unchartered waters.  Who knows where we are sailing to, but we should take advantage while it lasts. ‘Sell live and thrive’

24 Finished Bulls ave 221.1p/kg

A better average again with all buyers ‘fit’ for cattle.  Chris & Mark Shenton showed 3 pure Blonde bulls to 252p (twice) and 250p to gross a top of £1900.  David Goddard had 4 big Lims up to 248p (£1884), 247p (£1753), 245p and 240p.  A big Limousin from Messrs Bennett, Threaphurst sold at £1992.

33 Steers – overall average 230.7p/kg

Unprecedented levels in the clean ring today with cattle selling to extraordinary levels.  Top call today was 259p (twice) for a posh Blonde from David Brentnall, Underwood and a big well finished Limousin from Stan & Geoff Evans to gross a terrific £1880.  4 Bullocks today from 3 vendors over £1800, Hereford to 240p, Angus to 242p, W Black to 234p and Lincoln to 230p.

41 Finished Heifers – overall average 233.5p/kg

12 best continentals over 250p with a high of 271p for a lovely Limousin from Philip Hooley, Wildboarclough with Keith Harrop at 268p and Stan Evans at 262p to gross an unbelievable £1975.  10 Natives had Hereford to 242p and Angus to 220p.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

A similar entry of 310 store and breeding cattle to satisfy the demand.  Bakewell buyers would like a chance to bid for your cattle so keep them coming.

A good selection and a vert strong trade.  Quite a few at the younger end just notching the average back from the £1000 mark.

Angus and Hereford selling well as were the Black & White.  Buyers were present for all comers.

Some wonderful heifers on offer in both bunches and as individuals for the specimen hunters.

Continental crosses lifting the highlights, but Angus and Hereford also taking the honours.

Trade dearer again with all continental calves, both bulls and heifers up a level on last week.

Only a small number of Black & White calves forward selling at recent rates with the prices below speaking for themselves and many more could have been sold to advantage.

A total entry of 1453 sheep included 1194 lambs.  Best lightweight butchers lambs to 259p/kg with best butchers lambs to 259p/kg.  The top gross today £186.44/head. Overall average 237.85p/kg

A slightly larger entry and the middle meated Mules very good to sell, but the time of year is bringing out larger runs of plain ewes which have obviously just been weaned.

The best continental types topped with Texels from Jackie Trueman at £159 with others at £146 and £145.

Better Mules £111-£114 with other plainer sorts £68-£76.  Best continental rams to £147 and £158.

Best horned types over £72 per head.

Grazing purchasers out already, more sheep required to satisfy demand.
