Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2021-08-23

BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 23rd August

A busy market for the week before the Bank Holiday with 734 Cattle and 1447 Sheep.  Trade remains outstanding with plenty of highlights to be discovered in the rest of this report.

For the avoidance of doubt, next week’s market is on Tuesday 31st August.

There were 425 Store & Breeding cattle and prices were maintained at recent levels bolstered by the confidence from the finished cattle department.

Steers reached £1,460 and the average of £989 indicates the strength of demand.  Heifers peaked at £1350 to average £876 and Feeding Bulls sold to £1,030.

In the Breeding Section the day’s highlight was a consignment of Longhorn cows & calves to £1,400 to average £1,273.

There were 126 Finished Cattle with trade taking another upward hike.

Top figures 290p and £1,869 per head.  The 51 Heifers averaged a remarkable 241.3p.

If you are a Finished Cattle producer and have not tried selling live at Bakewell, perhaps it is time to give us a try.

A useful turnout of 122 OTM and Feeding Cattle maintained recent price levels with top figures of 210p and £2,006.

The average looked good again at 145.4p.

A few more Calves about with 61 on offer, Bulls sold to £490 and Heifers £395.

Over in the sheep shed the 1185 lambs were wanted with top figures 275p and £158.95.

Both the SQQ and the overall average were 242p.

Cull sheep seem scarce at the moment with only 262 forward.  Ewes sold to £159 to average £100.98.

IMPORTANT NOTES

      SHEEP SALE SOCIAL NIGHT

It is with regret that we have had to cancel the Social Night which was to be held on Thursday 26th August.  In view of the current COVID situation (we have several numbers of our team isolating at present) it does not seem wise to hold the usual gathering.

We will revise the situation at the end of the Sheep Sale season and perhaps celebrate the end rather than the beginning.

Other News-Store Cattle List Covers

After many months of thinking up humorous and cryptic front covers for the weekly store list, I have run out of ideas.  So, we are going to try something different.

If you have an entry a future week either send me a photograph or we are more than happy to come out and take one and we will put it on the front of the Store List.
