Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 06-09-2021

BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 6th September

A busy market with 686 cattle and 1,657 sheep on offer and numbers keeping up despite the recent Breeding Sheep sales which will have caused 6-day shutdowns for some vendors.

Store and Breeding Cattle out in force with 389 head selling at very strong prices.

Steers reached £1,500 with the average only a whisker short of target at £999.96.

Heifers made up to £1,560 with their average £889 and Feeding Bulls £1,140.

In the Breeding Section Cow & Calves topped at £2,080 with in calf cows selling to £1,470.

If you have Store or Breeding Cattle in test – do not hesitate, give us a call so that we can advertise your stock – speak to Alastair Sneddon on 07973 982441.

There is now doubt that the store prices are being driven by finishers who are enjoying tremendous prices for their cattle in the prime ring.

Top figures this week 294p/kg and £2,002.  Even with a somewhat poorer sample than recent weeks the average for the 51 heifers was 227p.

The OTM and Feeding Cows section was well supported with 115 head on offer.

Top figures 215p and £1,785 with the average looking particularly healthy at 149p.

49 Calves on offer this week with bulls to £305 and heifers £305.

In the sheep section the 1,308 lambs looked well sold with the best to 280p and £138.62 per head.

The SQQ and the overall average were exactly the same at 239p.

There were 347 Cull Sheep forward with ewes to £169 and the average £100.52.

Other News-Store Cattle List Covers

After many months of thinking up humorous and cryptic front covers for the weekly store list, I have run out of ideas.  So, we are going to try something different.

If you have an entry a future week either send me a photograph or we are more than happy to come out and take one and we will put it on the front of the Store List.

133 FINISHED CATTLE – overall average 223.3p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

A tremendous turnout of cattle again and trade for the best remains outstanding but some leaner cattle look a little less, but as we have the facility of a green market, further feeding buyers at ringside made sure that all cattle made their money.

37 Finished Bulls ave 220.3p/kg

Possibly the dearest we have had them with plenty of trade about.  4 super pedigree bulls from Boden & Davies, Mellor stole the trade and topped at 261p (£1821) with his other Limmy at 254p (£1772) He also had Charolais break the £2000 barrier with his 852kg bull selling at 239p to gross £2036.  To illuminate the level of trade today we had 12 Friesian bulls today to average 202p selling for Mark Ludlam.
