BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 13th September

 

A very busy day at Bakewell with 776 Cattle and 2,128 Sheep.  Strong trade in all departments with cattle dearer than ever and a sheep prices a shade easier, but holding up well for the time of year.

The Store & Breeding Cattle section was well supported with 475 on offer.  Yet again records were broken with Steers to £1,480 and Feeding Bulls to £1,090.  In the Breeding department Cows & Calves sold to £2,300.

A good entry of 133 Finished Cattle maintained recent levels with top figures 282p/kg and £2,097 per head.

The 76 Heifers which included a decent number of Native crosses averaged a remarkable 242.8p.

Some 115 OTM & Feeding Cows were forward this week with the best on offer to 205p and £1,715 per head.

Despite a mixed sample the average emerged at a creditable 143.2p.

49 Calves on offer and clearly in good demand with Bulls to £475 and Heifers to £210.

In the Sheep department the largest entry of lambs for some time with 1,736 forward.

Trade was back a touch on the week with the best to 269p/kg and £134.50 per head and the SQQ average was 227.4p about 10p above last year’s figure.

392 Cull Sheep this week Ewes to £159 to average £94.48.

A Bakewell customer suffered a serious injury to his hand after lambs jumped onto the unlocked ramp whilst his fingers were in the way.

Geoff Cooper of Home Farm, Wirksworth has passed away, he was the brother of the late Ken Cooper. His funeral will take place on Tuesday 21st September at 11am at St Mary’s Church, Wirksworth.

116 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows Overall Average 143.3p

Exactly the same numbers and trade as last week.  Only a few Continentals on offer today with a very high percentage of Dairy cows on offer, some of which would be very lean.  Best Limousin cows topped at 205p for a lovely cow from Ian Mellor, Kniveton to gross £1533.  OTM clean heifers sold from 192 to 205p with great big cows from Messrs Ponsonby at 190p or £1660 with others up to £1715.  Better sorts all 170p plus with plenty more 150-170p.

Once again, as dear as we have seen them with buyers for the best and the rest.

 

32 Finished Bulls ave 220.9p/kg

Top 10 over 240p with a couple at 268p and 260p from Mark Shenton, Handforth both being pure Blondes and grossing up to £1800.  Adam Neachell had 256 and 254p for Blues with Robert Hardy at 249p or £1867.  Big bulls sold over £2000 with the Edge Family topping the day at £2097 for a well fed Limousin with 2 others at £1909 and £1808.  B&W’s sold to 202p for Messrs Cresswell.

As dear as we have ever had them with some amazing prices and returns.  Stan & Geoff Evans topped the day at 279p or £1852 with his only Bullock.  Michael Hadfield had 5 and selling to 277 and 270p for well bred and fed Limousin.  10 Native today had Hereford to 248p and Lincoln to 235p.

A shed full of well fed and bred heifers and a trade to match anywhere.  Top 9 over 270p with 4 topping 280p and up to a high of 282 and 281p for tremendous handy weight Limousin from Adam Neachell, Aldridge.  Stan Evans had 2 big heifers at 280p (£1971) (£1764).  Chris Shenton had 278p and Michael Wynne had 275p, 274p and 269p.

10 Hereford sold to 245p and 7 Angus x to 236p.

Young cattle sold at £1,620 and £1,260 for Jonathon Hall at Longnor and Mr AG Tomkinson had a 19 mnths B Blue x to £1,640 and a 16 mnths Lim to £1,480.

Angus & Hereford crosses selling well and good level bunches commanding a premium.

A total of 2128 sheep included a very good entry of 1736 lambs.  Despite trade dipping slightly at the end of last week, quality meated lambs regardless of weight were still very keenly bid for to a top of 269p/kg for heavy weight butchers lambs, with best butchers lambs to 260p/kg and light weight lambs to 266p/kg.

The overall average was 227.49p/kg.

Nearly 400 Ewes and Tups this week saw less big Texels with frame forward.

The very best to £159 with smart bred Texels from the Bennett Family in Cheshire.

Best Suffolks to £139 for Maurice Gregory with the better end of the Mules just touching the £100 mark.

No very best Swales or Woodlands this week with some plainer swales up to the early £50 range.

Big Texel Tups to £138.
