Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2020-11-02

Monday 2nd November

Bakewell Market Report for Monday 2nd November

With the next lockdown looming there were good entries of 795 Cattle and 2,113 Sheep for the market before the re-introduction of ‘Drop & Go’ starting Thursday 5th November.

Everyone needs to be aware that following guidance from Defra and The Livestock Auctioneers Association we will be introducing a strict ‘Drop & Go’ policy for all Finished and Cull Cattle and Sheep.

We are also strongly recommending that vendors of Store stock also adopt the ‘Drop & Go’ rules, but understand that in some circumstances they may wish to be present for a brief period only to see their animals sold.

Do not forget that sales in the Store Ring are livestreamed on www.streaming.auctionmarts.com

We are expecting further clarification before next week and will issue the latest guidance on Friday when the Store Cattle Early Warning List is posted.

Please check our website and Facebook page for the latest position.

These measures are aimed at reducing risk to Vendors, purchasers and staff together with their respective families at home.

With ‘Drop & Go’ it becomes more important than ever that entry forms are properly completed and include all the information that you would like us to pass on to prospective purchasers.

The Store & Breeding Cattle section had attracted a decent entry of head and there was no lack of confidence with trade strong from start to finish.

Steers reached £1,200, Heifers £1,280 and Feeding Bulls £920.

In the breeding section cows & calves peaked at £1,480.

The were 121 finished cattle with plenty of demand in evidence.

Top figures 261p and £1,731.

The overall average for 50 heifers was a very respectable 204.6p.

OTM Cattle were out in force with 125 on parade.

Top figures 186p and £1,416 with the average much as last week at 112.5 pence for a somewhat varied selection.

77 Calves on offer, bulls to £315 and Heifers £298.

The sheep section was extremely busy with 1,300 lambs and almost 800 ewes.

Lambs sold on a cracking trade with top figures 250p/kg and £125.61 per head.

The SQQ average looked very healthy at 214.4 pence.

Trade for the cull sheep was also outstanding with ewes to £157 and the average £84.96.

Forthcoming Fixtures Bakewell Market

As a consequence of the new ‘lockdown’ All on farm sales have been postponed for the time being.  We will let you know what new arrangements have been made when the situation allows.

All future market fixtures will go ahead on a drop & go basis only.

We will be enforcing a very strict regime which will not be popular however, in order for the markets to stay open we all need to abide by the rules.

If you have any concerns about this by all means give Alastair Sneddon a call.
