Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2021-10-18

BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 18th October

Another big day at Bakewell following closely on the heels of the High Peak Livestock Society’s sales of Suckled Calves and Hill Sheep.

A good number of producers tied up under the 6-day rules, but 663 cattle and 2,128 sheep were forward for the Monday market.

Not quite as many Store & Breeding Cattle on offer, but a respectable entry of 419 sold on another tremendous trade.

Steers reached £1,425, Heifers £1,370 and Feeding Bulls £1,005.  Cows & Calves reached £1,390 and a 46 mnths Simmental Stock Bull £1,720.

Finished Cattle numbers were well down at 72 and prices very strong as a consequence.  Top figures 285p and £2,026 and the average for the 21 heifers 237p.

Plenty of action in the OTM section with top figures 186p and £1,590 to average 132.3p.

Calf numbers holding steady at 51 with Bulls to £325 and Heifers £255.

Things were busy in the Sheep Department.  There were 1,667 lambs forward with the best to 296p/kilo and £145.92 per head.  The SQQ average for a somewhat mixed entry was 234.2p.

Another decent entry of 461 Cull Sheep with Ewes to £155 the average £77.61.

121 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows Overall Average 132.3p

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

Another very good entry of cows and a full line up of buyers and a very strong price for all cows on offer with cows dearer on the week.  A greater percentage of B/W cows in the entry and virtually no OTM clean cattle on offer.  Top price today was 186p for Red Limousin Cows from Ben Simpson and Messrs Green, Alfreton.  Better sorts 160p plus with plenty more 150p +.

72 FINISHED CATTLE – overall average 233.4p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

A very disappointing entry of only 72 cattle from 30 vendors and selling to a packed ring of 16 individual buyers.  I suspect many vendors today would be tied up with the ‘6 Day Rule’ due to calf and sheep sales on Friday and Saturday last week.

Very dear with a super top price of 276p for a pure Blonde from Charles Mycock, Flagg.  Keith Harrop had 251 and 247p with big Char from Messrs Prue, Woolley grossing up to £1904 and £1873.  Friesian to 209p (twice) for Messrs Mason and Messrs Cresswell.

Proceedings commenced with the presentation of a bottle of Bagshaws Whisky to Robert Flower of Alstonefield, winner of last week’s caption competition.

There was a decent entry of 419 head with numbers down a bit after last week’s total of 1,359 stores sold through Bakewell on Monday and Friday.

461 Cull Sheep

A very varied entry with not as many “best end” continentals as recent weeks but plenty of buyers for all categories including the plainer types and grazers.

Top call £148 for big Texels from Furness & Taylor, with others at £139 and £138.

The Mules varied a little with the best above £102 but some meated types with much less frame £72- £78.

Best framed over £64 and buyers from 3 counties for grazing and feeding ewes.

Competition for big strong tups was good with 4 cull rams over £112 to top at £185.
